Bio

Alicia lives with her grandma. Her mother left her when she was very young. Alicia's dad lives on the same property with his wife and Alicia's 3 stepsisters. Her dad helps provide for her needs. He usually works 6 months of the year harvesting sugar cane (November-May). However, this year he has not been able to find work due to diminished kidney function. When her dad is working, the family is able to meet their basic needs. When he is unemployed, they often are without food. Alicia has struggled in school because she has partially deaf. She needs medical attention to improve her hearing. School has always been a challenge for Alicia. She has been working very hard this year in her classes. She will begin 2nd grade in February 2014. Her favorite class is Spanish. In her free time, she likes to do work on her homework. Thank you for helping her dream for a better future.

April 2, 2014

Alicia started 2nd grade this month. Alicia is enjoying her new classes and teacher. She really enjoys her Spanish class. Through sponsorship she received her new uniform, shoes, backpack, and school supplies for the new year.

July 14, 2014

Alicia’s second grade year is going well. Alicia really likes to be in school with the other students even though she struggles to keep up academically. Her teacher is very helpful to Alicia individually even with such a large class. Though her grades are low, Alicia is passing all of her classes. Her top grades are in culture and physical education. Alicia continues to receive weekly tutoring and homework help through the Sponsorship Program.

October 28, 2014

Alicia received her second uniform and shoes for the last part of the year. Her grades continue to be low but she is passing all of her classes. She works really hard during weekly tutoring sessions. Thanks to a team who has been helping us to tutor kids in Santa Matilde, Alicia has been receiving individual homework help and extra academic support. Through her sponsorship, Alicia and her family received extra food provisions during a time when many people are out of work. Alicia is working on writing sentences, identifying numbers, and basic addition and subtraction.

April 21, 2015

Alicia started the third grade in the beginning of February. She really enjoys attending class and getting to be a part of what is going on though her level of understanding on topics in class is low. Alicia celebrated her quincenera (her 15th birthday) in January. Thanks to her sponsorship, she was able to have a small celebration with her church family. It was such a great time to celebrate her! She felt so loved and had a lot of fun with her friends. Alicia’s family received a water filter in December that will provide clean water for several years.

Alicia loves school. She loves being around the kids and working on her schoolwork. As she moves up in the grades, the topics become more and more difficult for Alicia to understand. Alicia is in the third grade this year and does not really understand the multi-digit multiplication that her class is learning in math. This does not seem to bother her and she continues to copy things down from the board and works to participate in her classes. Alicia’s handwriting continues to improve as well as her understanding of language. Her top grades are in culture (87%) and physical education (100%). She is such a hard worker in school and around her house. Her half-sister, Anayesi, has been helping her with her homework. Through her sponsorship, Alicia received funds to participate in the Mother’s Day and International Kid’s Day celebrations at her school.

December 2015

Alicia is such a happy girl. She is learning important social skills in classes and is doing a good job working hard to complete assignments. Alicia comes to tutoring every single week in an effort to make sure she gets her work done. Anayesi has been helping Alicia with her homework as well. Alicia received her second uniform and school shoes of the year. Alicia’s grades are all passing on her third report card of the year, but she struggles to understand the basic content. We are glad that Alicia can go to school to be around other children. This is so helpful for social skills and she loves school.

April 2016

Alicia began the fourth grade at the beginning of elementary school. Thanks to her sponsorship, she received her uniform, backpack, shoes, school supplies, and an athletic outfit to be able to participate in her physical education class. Alicia loves school. She attends daily and is excited to put on her uniform and be with the other students. Recently, Alicia has improved so much in her verbal skills. She seems to understand more of what is said to her and what is going on and is more able to communicate what she says. While this is a slight improvement, we are excited for her. This growth could be from her classmates being more verbal in school and also because her half-sisters have moved to another piece of property and there aren’t as many people there to answer for her. Regardless, be praying for Alicia as she seems to be finding her voice. Thank you for your love for this sweet girl and seeing her uniqueness.

Fall 2016

Alicia continues to develop her own unique voice to express her needs and desires. We are thankful that she has the opportunity to study so that she can progress in her social skills. Alicia continues to enjoy school and working alongside her peers in fourth grade. She received her new uniform and shoes for the second semester of classes. Her sponsorship was also able to purchase a new bed for Alicia after hers broke. This allows her to sleep well each night. As a focus on preventative health care, Alicia received a dental cleaning, fluoride treatment and dental hygiene teaching through the New Song clinic. Thank you for your love and support for Alicia. She hopes to see you again one day.
