Bio

Anayesi lives with her parents, grandparents, and two younger sisters. They are expecting a new baby sister in early 2014. Her dad usually works 6 months of the year harvesting sugar cane (November-May) while her mom stays at home with the children. This year it has been difficult to find work because of his kidney infection. The family has been really struggling with hunger and health issues. Anayesi will begin 3rd grade in February 2014. Her favorite class is Spanish. She has such a joyful, sassy personality. In her free time, she likes to draw. She says she 2dreams of going to medical school and becoming a doctor.

April 2, 2014

Anyesi started 3rd grade this year. She is really enjoying her new classes. Thanks to sponsorship, she received her new uniform, shoes, backpack and school supplies for the new year. Anayesi is receiving weekly math tutoring to help improve her grades. Her mom gave birth to a new baby girl this month. Anayesi is excited to be a big sister once again!

July 14, 2014

Anayesi is doing well in the third grade. She is learning subtraction of large numbers and her multiplication tables in math. She struggles some conceptually with her multiplication but the weekly tutoring is helping her better understand it. Anayesi received her first report card of the year. While her grades are low, she is passing all of her classes! Her top grades are in math, Spanish, culture, and civics. Her favorite class is Spanish. She has been learning about poetry and has practiced writing her own poems. Anayesi’s little sister, Lydia, continues to have health problems, which leaves Anayesi with more responsibility in the house. Her dad has been working on and off to be able to better provide for their family. However, her family still struggles financially. The Student Sponsorship staff and locals, New Song Mission, have been working with her family to find the best way to support them while not creating dependence.

October 28, 2014

Anayesi received her second uniform and shoes for the last part of the year. This has been a difficult year for Anayesi with her little sister, Lydia, being in and out of hospitals. When Lydia is in the hospital, her mom stays with her, and Anayesi misses her mom and Lydia while they are away. She is such a devoted sister and caretaker. When Lydia is home, Anayesi protects her and watches out for her. It is hard for Anayesi to be away from Lydia. She is so worried. Anayesi continues to come to weekly tutoring. She thrives in her tutoring group as she is able to learn on a more individual level and focus on the things she needs help in. Her classes are learning how to do word problems and identifying when to use multiplication or division. Anayesi was so thankful to receive your letter and gift! She asks about you often and hopes to see you soon!

April 21, 2015

Anayesi finished her third grade year and did so well! We are extremely proud of all that she accomplished. This year has been a difficult one of Anayesi as she has taken a main role in the care of her little sister, Lydia, who continues to struggle with health issues. Anayesi did an amazing job stepping into roles that no nine year old should have to. She loves her family and has a deep desire to see them together. On top of caring for her little sisters, Anayesi’s grades went up in school. She ended the school year with a 90% in math, which is the single highest grade she has ever received in math. She worked so hard this year academically and within her family. Anayesi is amazing and knows how much you love her and believe in her. Thank you for your sponsorship and love for her and her family.

August 4, 2015

Anayesi is enjoying the fourth grade but she can notice that it is much more difficult than previous years. She received all passing grades on her report card and continues to work very hard. This has been another hard year for Anayesi with sister, Lydia, in and out of the hospitals. When Lydia goes to the hospital, her mom goes too leaving Anayesi helping her grandmother to take care of the other girls. After she finishes her own homework, Anayesi helps Alicia and Johanna with theirs. She is proud to be a big sister but has many other responsibilities. She worries when Lydia is in the hospital and loves to talk to her on the phone. Her dad has been working but was recently laid off as many of the jobs are over for the season. The next few months will be difficult for Anayesi’s family. Anayesi continues to attend weekly tutoring through New Song. She works so hard to understand and practice her studies. We have been practicing division in our tutoring group, which is a topic that is difficult for many students. She is getting better every week understanding the basic concept of division. Anayesi has been studying the regions of Nicaragua in her social studies class. She is so proud of the maps that she has drawn.

December 2015

I couldn’t be more proud of Anayesi. She is working so hard in her classes and on her third report card of the year, almost all her grades were in the 90s. Her top grades were in math (90%), physical education (96%), and civics (92%). Her lowest grades were still not very low, with grades in language arts (88%) and science (86%). In math, her class did a unit on fractions and have now moved on to order of operations. Anayesi does not like to miss school and often tells her family that she can’t do something they are asking of her because she has school. She washes her own clothes to make sure she has something to wear. Her teacher comments that Anayesi is a great student who always does her work. Anayesi was able to go on a field trip with her class. She received her second uniform and school shoes of the year to finish out the second half of the school year.

April 2016

Anayesi began the fifth grade in the beginning of February. I am so proud of this sweet girl. She is intelligent naturally, but also works so hard and is more determined than anyone I have seen. Anayesi washes her own uniforms for school and attends class even when she is sick because she doesn’t want to miss. Thanks to her sponsorship, she received her uniform, backpack, shoes, school supplies, and an athletic outfit to be able to participate in her physical education class. Anayesi continues to attend weekly tutoring sessions taught by New Song staff and even helps some of the other students with their assignments. In social studies, Anayesi is learning about maps and has completed several drawings of Nicaragua and Central America. In science, she is learning about blood types and the importance of donating blood. Recently, Anayesi, her three sisters, and her mom moved to another piece of property within Santa Matilde. They still spend a lot of time at their grandmother’s house because she helps to feed them. Her dad left for Costa Rica for work several months ago. Thank you for your sponsorship of Anayesi. She asks about you both all the time!

Fall 2016

Anayesi received her second uniform of the year in July. She is halfway through her fifth grade year and continues to maintain passing grades. Anayesi has such a desire to do well and outperform her family’s expectations of her. We wholeheartedly believe that she is doing this. While some of her grades are lower, she does all of her work and tries so hard in school. Her top grades are in her vocational class, physical education, and culture. She has really loved improving her reading and writing this year and practicing division. Her school also had a school-wide event celebrating typical Nicaraguan foods. Sponsorship helped provide the funds for this event and the church came together to cook for the school. Anayesi also received her annual dental cleaning and fluoride treatment through the New Song Dental Clinic. Recently, her community was without running water for a couple of weeks. Sponsorship provided the local school with a bucket for every classroom so that the students could have drinking water while in class. Anayesi says that she loves you both and hopes to see you soon.
