Bio

Brenda lives with her mom, step dad, and younger sister in a small house constructed out of sheets of tin. The family is in great financial need because her step dad has been unable to find consistent work. He works seasonally in the sugar cane fields and her mom works as a maid to help provide for the family. During the six months that her stepdad works, the family is able to meet their basic needs. When he is without work, they struggle to survive. Brenda is currently in 6th grade and is looking forward to her primary school promotion in December 2014. Brenda’s favorite classes are math and natural science. She dreams of becoming a secretary when she grows up.

Brenda and her family are so excited about her sponsorship! Brenda celebrated her graduation from primary school in December 2014 and started her first year of high school (7th grade) in February 2015. Brenda received her uniform, shoes, backpack, and school supplies for the new school year. She also received an athletic outfit in order to fully participate in her PE class. Brenda has been enjoying her first year of high school. She has made new friends and loves the opportunity to study new subjects, including English. English is her favorite class and also her highest grade (82%). Brenda’s teacher says that she works hard and pays attention well in class. However, she has been struggling in her math class. Brenda has received tutoring with our sponsorship staff to help raise her grades in math. Through her sponsorship, we were also able to provide Brenda and her family with food provisions when her dad was diagnosed with the early stages of kidney disease and had to rest from work. He just started into the six-month period of unemployment now that sugar cane planting and harvesting has ended. The next several months will be increasingly difficult for our community and for Brenda’s family. Her mom is working washing clothes for neighbors to sustain their family during this period of unemployment.

April 2016

Brenda is excited to continue her sponsorship with you. She started her second year of high school in February. Brenda received her uniform, shoes, backpack, school supplies and an athletic outfit in order to participate in her PE class. Brenda loves to attend school and works hard in her classes. Brenda has been learning about the environment in her science class and studying statistics in math. All high school students complete monthly service hours. For her service hours, Brenda has been tutoring struggling first and second graders. Brenda is an excellent teacher! She has a great deal of patience and compassion as she works with the younger students. We love to see her serving in that way.

Fall 2016

Brenda has become more involved at New Song this year. She has begun to attend our Wednesday night Bible studies and was even invited to be a part of the Wednesday youth leadership group. Brenda has also begun working as a Sunday school helper working with the 7-9 year old girls. Brenda is working in this class alongside her friend Carla and has really been enjoying this new role. We are proud of her growth! Brenda is doing well in her second year of high school. Brenda has a B average overall in her first semester of classes. Brenda has been learning about the periodic table in her science class and is very interested in this area of study. In math, they have been working quadratic equations. This has been difficult for Brenda, but she came to our sponsorship staff to receive extra tutoring to help increase her proficiency in math. Her sponsorship allowed her to attend a field trip with her school. They went to a national science fair in the capital city of Managua. Brenda also received her new uniform and pair of shoes for the second semester of classes. Brenda’s dad has been able to return to work in the fields, which is a huge answer to prayer for their family because last year he was too sick to be able to work.
