Bio

Carla lives with her parents and older brother. The family lives in a small house made of scraps and tree branches, and covered with sheets of plastic. The house has a tin roof. Their home is in need of major repair. When it rains water floods in through the holes in the tin roof. The entire house is only one bedroom.  Both of her parents are currently without work and the family struggles daily to put food on the table. Carla is currently in 4th grade.  Her favorite class is mathematics. In her free time, she likes to play soccer. When she grows up, Carla wants to be a doctor.

Through Carla’s sponsorship, she received her backpack, uniform, shoes, and school supplies needed for school. Carla’s family gave permission for the New Song outreach church to hold services in their yard. Carla recently helped to paint and set up decorations for the church. Carla’s classes ended in November for break and she will start sixth grade in February. This will be her final year of elementary school and looks forward to her graduation to high school. On her end of the year cumulative report card, Carla’s top grades were in her culture class and vocational class.

Carla is in 6th grade this year, and is looking forward to graduating to high school at the end of the school year, in December. She is especially enjoying her Language and Literature classes this year, and is looking forward to going an a class field trip to the pool within the next few weeks. Her family has been having trouble making ends meet, as both parents and her older brother struggle with health troubles. Through sponsorship, Carla received a new backpack, uniform, and school supplies in February. Sponsorship was also able to provide food for her family. She will be buying another new backpack as well, as her other one didn't handle the weight of all her school books very well!

October 28, 2014

Carla just celebrated her thirteenth birthday, and is excited about this new milestone in her life. She is growing into quite the young lady, and is being honored for her high grades in school this year. She marched in a local procession, for which sponsorship helped cover the costs of the uniform. Carla has also received a new uniform and shoes to see her through to the end of the year, and sponsorship was able to provide food for her and her family as they are going through a difficult time. There is a new youth group that has been meeting in Carla’s church, and she has eagerly been participating in both it and the regular Sunday School classes.

Carla just celebrated her graduation from 6th grade, and will be moving on to secondary school in February! Her church gathered around to commemorate the occasion and honor her scholastic success so far. She has been enjoying playing with her new baby cousin, and plans to study a lot over the holidays to prepare for her next step into high school. Carla's family recently attended a water safety seminar and received a water filter in donation through New Song that will allow her and her entire family access to clean water for the next 3 - 4 years.

Carla started her first year of secondary school in February 2015. She received her new uniform, shoes, backpack, and school supplies. She was also able to receive an athletic outfit to participate in her PE class. Carla has been thoroughly enjoying her first few months in high school. She is making new friends and loves her classes. Her favorite class is Technical Studies and Science where she has been learning about different types of plants. Her most difficult class and strictest teacher is math class. Carla and her class have been learning about the history of geometry and defining terms they will need to know for the remainder of the year. Carla is struggling to understand a math class that does not consist only of math problems. As she begins the new challenges of high school and a larger class load, Carla has needed many additional supplies. Through her sponsorship, she was able to purchase books for her classes and an atlas to help with her geography class.

November 2015

Carla continues to work hard in her first year of high school. The transition from elementary school to secondary school is difficult for many students. Carla is handling the transition well. Her favorite class and highest grade is in geography. Her most difficult class continues to be her math class. Currently they are learning to convert fractions to decimals. Carla received her uniform and shoes for the second semester of classes. Through her sponsorship, Carla was able to participate in celebrations at her school for Mother’s Day, Children’s Day and Father’s Day. She was also able to participate in a field trip with her school. Sponsorship also allowed Carla to celebrate her birthday at home with her family and friends. Thank you for helping her celebrate her special day. Carla and her family are very involved in their church in Nuevo Amanecer. They are thrilled that their church is growing and building a new church building this year.  

April 2016

Carla began her second year of high school at the beginning of February. Thanks to her sponsorship, she received her uniform, backpack, shoes, school supplies, and an athletic outfit to be able to participate in her physical education class. Her favorite class is science because they get to write a lot in coping things from the board. She likes learning about different topics in science and responding to questions. She has also loved learning history of music and instruments in her vocational class. Carla’s dad has been sick, but still working harvesting sugar cane. Carla’s sponsorship provides her with the tools she needs to succeed academically throughout the year as the harvest season is only half of the year.

Fall 2016

Carla received her second uniform and pair of school shoes of the year in July. She is halfway through her second year of high school. Her top grades are in physical education, her vocational class, and civics. In her high school, the students study geography for the first semester and then start to study history in the second semester. Carla and her class have moved on to studying the history of the Incan, Mayan, and Aztec civilizations. With the independence day of Nicaragua and several other Central American countries approaching, Carla has been learning about the national anthems of five of the Central American countries. Carla is struggling some in her culture class and in science but still maintains passing grades. Through her sponsorship, Carla received all of her school supplies and medicine from the New Song clinic.
