August 25, 2014

Carlos loves his first year of preschool this year! His favorite part of school is drawing. He is learning how to write his letters and his numbers. Recently, his mom left the house with his baby brother. She is living nearby in the same village, and at times, Carlos and his sister, Veronica, stay with her. Carlos’ sponsorship helps his family provide for his educational needs. He has received the school supplies he needs to do well in school and participate in his activities. In June, Carlos received his second uniform and school shoes for the year.

January 3, 2015

Carlos finished his year of school in November. He graduates in December from preschool and is very excited that he gets to take part in this event. Carlos’ sponsorship covered the costs of his graduation. While in school, Carlos was learning how to write his letters and numbers and practicing number sense. Carlos has great handwriting for a preschool student. In October, Carlos’ grandmother moved away with his older sister leaving Carlos and his baby brother living with his mom. This has been difficult on Carlos as he relies heavily on both his grandmother and sister.

April 22, 2015

Carlos and his family were so excited to celebrate his preschool graduation in December 2014. It was wonderful to see Carlos so proud of himself and to see his family there celebrating with him. His sister, Veronica, returned to Santa Matilde just in time for his graduation. She spent a couple months living with their relatives in another city, but is now back permanently with her mom and siblings. Carlos and Veronica really enjoyed the gifts that you sent them. His family participated in a public health teaching on water-born illnesses and received a free water filter for their family. Carlos began 1st grade in February 2015. He was so excited to begin elementary school! In this first month of classes, Carlos has been learning to write his letters and his name. He has also been learning to identify his numbers and count. Carlos knows his vowels well. Carlos received his uniform, shoes, backpack, and school supplies for the new school year.

July 2015

Carlos is doing very well in first grade. He has excellent grades in both reading and math. He has been learning many of his letter sounds and how to decode basic words. In math Carlos has been learning to identify numbers, identify greater than and less than, and to solve basic addition problems. His favorite class is math. Carlos received his new uniform and shoes for the second semester of classes. Carlos lost his first tooth in June. His mom pulled it for him. He was excited to show off his new smile.

December 2015

As the school year progressed and the skills because more difficult, Carlos began to struggle a little bit. He continued to maintain satisfactory grades, but had not met all of the first grade benchmarks. Carlos completed his end of the year reading and math exams to determine whether or not he was ready to move on to 2nd grade. After assessing these exams, his teacher and mom decided that it would be better for Carlos to repeat first grade to gain a better grip on phonics and basic reading skills. Many students can benefit greatly from repeating a grade early on in order to build a strong foundation. We hope that this decision will help Carlos build a better phonics foundation to ensure his success in the future. Part of his difficulties in the second semester was due to poor school attendance. Our sponsorship staff has met with Carlos and his mom in order to ensure that his attendance will improve next year. Carlos will also be required to attend weekly tutoring with our sponsorship staff to help improve his class performance. Through his sponsorship, we were able to repair their home to prevent leaks during the rainy season.

April 2016

Carlos began first grade again in February. He received his uniform, shoes, backpack, school supplies and an athletic outfit to participate in his PE class. Carlos has been attending weekly tutoring sessions with our sponsorship staff in order to have additional support in his reading development. Carlos is falling in love with books and is always asking to borrow a book if he finishes his work early during these tutoring sessions! Although he is not able to read stories on his own yet, he loves to look at books and talk about what is happening. Carlos is doing well sounding out and writing simple words. In math he has been practicing identifying numbers, counting, and shapes. We believe that Carlos will deepen his knowledge of phonics and number sense this year as he is able to review skills and build a better foundation for the rest of his education.

Fall 2016

Repeating first grade has been so beneficial to Carlos. He has begun to master his phonics skills and is one of the top students in his class this year. Carlos continues to attend weekly tutoring sessions with our sponsorship staff. He is doing excellent this year! He has already grown so much as a reader and is beginning to read simple stories for himself. He is so proud of his progress and so are we! Carlos received a reading book that he needed for his Language Arts class. Through his sponsorship his class now has a water bucket to provide the students with water during the school day. Carlos also was able to cook a traditional Nicaraguan meal and present it for his Cultural Studies class. Carlos received his new uniform and shoes for the second semester of classes. Thanks to his sponsorship he was also able to receive a dental cleaning, fluoride treatment, and teaching on proper tooth brushing techniques.
