Bio

Cristhian is bright, attentive, and cheerful. He just started first grade at the Escuela Nuevo Amanacer, and enjoys all his classes. Cristhian has two sisters and a baby brother who all live together with him and his mother and stepfather. His mother sells food from a cart, and although his father is remarried, he is able to contribute to them as well from his job as a security guard. When not at school, you can usually find Cristhian playing outside with one or more of his cousins who live in the same complex together.  He loves to use his imagination and hopes to be a firefighter when he grows up.

January 3, 2015

Cristhian is such a joy to be around, and he and his family are thrilled that he is sponsored! He is no longer living with his biological mother, but has been taken in by his aunt and her spouse, who are building a new house for their new little family. Cristhian is the proud big brother of a new little sister, and was so glad to be able to stand by her side during her baby dedication this past month.  He is doing alright in his classes, and excels at reading, but has been having some trouble in his math and language arts classes. Through sponsorship, Cristhian was able to receive a new pair of shoes, school supplies and medical care when he was feeling under the weather. As the school year finishes up, Cristhian looks forward to going with his family to the beach and then moving up to 2nd grade.

April 22, 2015

Cristhian enjoyed his break from school spending time playing with his large extended family. They are very close-knit and genuinely enjoy being together. Cristhian passed all of his classes in first grade, but his phonics work is still below grade level. Cristhian started 2nd grade in February 2015. He received his uniform, shoes, backpack and school supplies. Cristhian’s sponsorship has been a huge blessing to his family and has been able to help him greatly. Sponsorship allowed Cristhian to purchase an outfit for his PE class. It also gave him the opportunity to celebrate his birthday together with his family. Cristhian’s family also received food provisions when they were passing through a difficult financial time and Cristhian was able to have free medical care through the New Song clinic. In December, Cristhian and his family attended a public health teaching on water-born illnesses and received a free water filter so that they will have clean drinking water at their home. Cristhian’s teacher says that he is doing well in school. He works hard and listens well, but he is still reading below grade level. Thankfully his family has been working with him in the afternoons to help improve his phonics skills.

July 2015

Cristhian continues to radiate joy. His smile can light up a room! Although his teacher says that he participates well in class, Cristhian still struggles in his core classes. He is passing for the year, but his grades are low. Cristhian has been able to work one-on-one a few times with our staff, but continues to read below grade level. His best grades are in PE and Cultural Studies (both 95%). Cristhian received a new uniform and pair of shoes for the second semester of classes.

November 2015

Cristhian finished 2nd grade. In the second semester, he was able to bring his Language & Literature grade up significantly. He is still struggling greatly with math and phonics. He failed math for the third grading period, but is still passing for the year. In math they are now studying multiplication and division. These units of study are very difficult for many students. His best grades are Cultural Studies (98%) and Civics (83%). Through his sponsorship, Cristhian was able to participate in two field trips with his school. Although Cristhian finished the year with passing grades, his teacher suggested that he remain in 2nd grade in order to have a better grasp on both phonics and math before moving on to third grade. His mom agreed to hold him back in second grade next year. Our sponsorship staff agrees that developing a better foundation in the basics will help Cristhian to succeed in the future. He will begin 2nd grade again in February 2016.

April 2016

Thanks to Cristhian’s sponsorship, he received his backpack, uniform, shoes, school supplies, and an athletic outfit to participate in his physical education class. Last year, Cristhian struggled in reading and his teacher recommended that he repeat the second grade to build a better foundational base of his skills. New Song staff is working with Cristhian and his family to set up a tutoring schedule for more one-on-one help. Cristhian loves math because he enjoys working with numbers. Cristhian’s teacher comments that he attends school regularly and pays attention in class. His mom works selling candies in the community and his dad guards at a school.

Fall 2016

Cristhian has improved greatly in his academics this year. Repeating second grade has been beneficial to him, especially in allowing Cristhian the opportunity to improve his reading skills. He now has advanced grades in Language Arts. Cristhian received two months of weekly tutoring with one of our sponsorship interns to deepen his phonics and math skills. Although Cristhian has improved greatly in his academics, his teacher commented that she has had trouble with Cristhian’s behavior in class. He has been lying to his teacher, using vulgar language and disrespecting his classmates. Our sponsorship staff met with Cristhian in regards to his class behavior. Cristhian received his new uniform and shoes for the second semester of classes. Thanks to his sponsorship, he was also able to receive medical care and medicine through the New Song clinic.
