Bio

Esmeralda lives with her mom and older sister. Esmeralda’s father passed away in February 2011 from renal failure. Her mom remarried in January 2014. Esmeralda’s mom, Felix, works with the New Song garden program. The entire family is an active part of the church. Esmeralda is full of life and personality. She always befriends everyone who sets foot on New Song’s property. Esmeralda will begin 3rd grade in February 2014. Her favorite class is math. Esmeralda dreams of becoming a doctor.

April 21, 2015

Esmeralda finished the third grade in December and began her fourth grade year at the beginning of February. She was excited to begin the new school year with her new backpack, uniform, school shoes, and supplies provided by her sponsorship. This year, in the fourth grade, Esmeralda will be working heavily on her cursive writing and will be required to write mainly in that style. At the end of the school year last year, Esmeralda received food provisions for her and her family while her mom was sick and unable to work. She was also able to participate in the end of the year celebration with her class at school. In December, Esmeralda and her family received a water filter and a teaching on water borne illnesses. This will provide clean water for several years.

Esmeralda is doing well in the fourth grade. She enjoys school and getting to spend time with her friends. Her favorite class is math even though she says that it can be very difficult. In math, she is learning about long division, which can be a hard topic for many students. Her least favorite class is language arts. Through Esmeralda’s sponsorship, she has received medicine and visits to the New Song Clinic when she wasn’t feeling well. She received her annual dental cleaning and fluoride treatment through the sponsorship program. Esmeralda was also given a separate uniform to be able to fully participate in her PE class.

December 2015

Esmeralda is doing well and passing all of her classes. Although her grades lowered on her third report card of the year, she still maintains passing grades. Her top grades are in physical education, culture, science, and social studies. Currently, her favorite class is math. She has been studying fractions and working to learn about mixed and improper fractions. She boasts that it comes easily for her and that the topic isn’t difficult. Esmeralda is looking forward to the end of the school year. She received her second uniform and pair of school shoes of the year. Through her sponsorship, she was also able to go on a field trip with her class and see the doctor when she wasn’t feeling well.

April 2016

Esmeralda started 5th grade in February 2016. She received her uniform, shoes, backpack, school supplies and an athletic outfit to participate in her PE class. Esmeralda continues to enjoy her math class the most. At the beginning of the year, they are reviewing topics from last year. Esmeralda is excited to continue work with fractions because it was one of the favorite topics from fourth grade. Esmeralda is excited because her mom is expecting a baby. They just found out that she is expecting another girl. Esmeralda was hoping to have a baby brother, but she is very happy that she will soon be a big sister! She is ready to help her mom holding and feeding the baby when she comes, but does not want to learn to change diapers.

Fall 2016

Esmeralda’s mom gave birth to a healthy baby girl, Emeli Natalia, in May. The whole family loves little Emeli! Esmeralda is doing well in 5th grade. She has a C average overall in her classes. In math she has been learning to divide large numbers. In Science, they have studied electricity and completed a project where they had to create a closed circuit to light a light bulb. She received a new uniform and pair of shoes for her second semester of classes as well as additional school supplies she needs to be successful in class. Through her sponsorship, she was able to attend two field trips with her class. She was also able to receive medical care and medicine through the New Song clinic. Esmeralda was so happy to receive your letter. Thank you for taking the time to write to her.
