Bio

Estefany lives with her mom, dad, and two older siblings. The family is close-knit, but struggles financially. Estefany's dad, like many men in her community, only works six months of the year (November-May) during the sugar cane planting and harvesting season. When her father has work, they are able to meet their basic needs. During the months of unemployment, the family struggles to survive. Estefany is currently in her last year of preschool and will have her preschool promotion in November 2013. She loves school! Sponsorship would help her study consistently and dream for a better future.

June 2015

Estefany and her family are so excited about her sponsorship! Last year Estefany attended a semi-private school in the sugar cane company along with her older sister. Now that her sisters has graduated from elementary school and moved on to secondary school, Estefany would have to travel by herself via bus to school each morning. Because of this, Estefany switched schools this year and is now attending a public school closer to her home. She started second grade in February 2015. Although Estefany is doing very well in her classes, she is not very happy with her new school. At Estefany’s old school, she was able to study English, which was her favorite class. The public schools do not offer English until secondary school. Estefany misses the opportunity to study additional subjects and is already talking with her family about transferring back to her old school next year. Estefany’s teacher comments that she works hard, attends school faithfully and is very intelligent. Estefany received her uniform, shoes, backpack, and needed school supplies for the year.

August 2015

Estefany has been working hard in her first year of high school. She enjoys school especially spending time with her friends. On her second report card of the year, her top grades are in civics (90%), and geography (87%). She is doing well in many of her other classes. However, Estefany has been struggling in her science class but is working hard to bring her grades up. Estefany enjoys learning but is having a difficult time balancing the pressures of being a young teenager and succeeding in school. She is a bright girl who loves her friends and her family very much. Through her sponsorship, Estefany received her second uniform and school shoes of the year and a separate uniform for her PE class. She was able to receive funds to complete several class assignments involving research at a local internet café. Estefany went on a field trip with her school to the capital city of Managua. She was able to go to the New Song Clinic when she wasn’t feeling well and receive medicine. Estefany’s school held several events celebrating Mother’s Day and International Kid’s Day. With the help of her sponsorship, Estefany was able to participate in these activities.

December 2015

Estefany continues to do well in second grade. She is an extremely bright and hardworking student. She has a 92% average overall in 2nd grade. When asked about her favorite class, Estefany continues to say that English is her favorite. She still misses her old school and wishes that she still had the opportunity to study English. In the most recent grading period, her best grade was in Civics (98%). Estefany’s most difficult class is math. She has an 83% in this class. Estefany and her classmates have been learning to multiply and just began a unit of study on division. These concepts are difficult for many students. Estefany is doing well, but says math is her most challenging class. She prefers Language & Literature where she continues to improve her writing and reading comprehension skills.

April 2016

Estefany began the third grade at the beginning of February. Thanks to her sponsorship, she received her uniform, backpack, shoes, school supplies, and an athletic outfit to be able to participate in her physical education class. In her language arts class, Estefany is learning how to look up words in the dictionary and answer questions based on a story. She is also learning about parts of a sentence. Her math class has starting studying their multiplication tables. While Estefany likes her school and has many friends, she still misses her old school. Estefany is excited to welcome a new baby cousin at the beginning of April.

Fall 2016

Estefany enjoyed the opportunity to visit with you during your trip to Nicaragua. She continues to do well in third grade. In Language Arts she has been reading stories and completing summary tables to improve comprehension. In math, her class has begun a unit on division. Division is difficult for many students, but Estefany is doing very well. Her favorite class project was working on the germination of plants for her science class. Estefany received her new uniform and shoes for the second semester of classes. Her sponsorship also allowed her to participate in a field trip with her school. Thank you for continuing to invest in her education.
