April 28, 2014

Genesis had her preschool graduation in December and was so excited to get to celebrate with her family. Genesis is enjoying the first grade. She especially likes learning her letters and how to read. Genesis’ sponsorship was able to provide food provisions for her family during a particularly difficult time. Through her sponsorship, she received her backpack, uniform, and the school supplies she needs to be successful in her classes. Through a new initiative in the sponsorship program, Genesis received a medical and dental checkup at the New Song clinic before the new school year. She was able to get the medicine and dental work she needed.

August 25, 2014

Genesis is enjoying first grade. She had an 85% average overall in the first grading period. Her best grades are in Cultural Studies and PE (both 90%). Math is her most difficult class. Genesis has been learning her letters and vowel sounds. She writes well and is beginning to read. The Student Sponsorship Program staff believes she will be a great reader. She is still struggling a little in math and has trouble with number identification and counting.  Genesis is a little bundle of JOY. She has an incredible amount of energy and loves to run around and play with everyone. Genesis had been sick, but her sponsorship helped her to receive medical care, medicines, and dental care. Thankfully, she is in great health now. As a focus on preventative health care, Genesis participated in a dental hygiene clinic where one of the New Song dentists taught her how to properly brush her teeth. Genesis also received a free toothbrush. Genesis received her new uniform and school shoes for the second semester of classes. Genesis and her family are very excited because she is expecting a new baby brother or sister in December 2014.

October 28, 2014

Genesis has been struggling some in first grade, especially with letter recognition and phonics. In math she has been learning addition and subtraction. In Language & Literature, Genesis has been studying consonant blends and learning to build words using these blends. She can sound words out well, but she often gets into a hurry and makes mistakes because she is looking at the pictures and guessing rather than sounding out the words. She was able to receive a book to help practice her reading skills at home so that she can catch up with where she should be in her phonics development. Genesis was able to receive a new backpack after hers broke. Her sponsorship also provided Genesis and her family with food provisions during the drought in our community. Genesis and her family are continuing to prepare for the arrival of their new baby in December. Genesis is excited, but she is struggling with the prospect that she will soon have to share her parents with a new baby. Genesis loves to come to the church property each day to play. She can often be seen at New Song laughing, swinging on the swing set and playing with her best friends from the neighborhood.

April 22, 2015

Genesis finished the school year in December. Her teacher recommended that her parents hold her back to repeat the first grade. Genesis needs a little extra help in practicing her reading. She is receiving weekly tutoring sessions from New Song Staff directed towards first graders. First grade can be a difficult year for many students and it is important they learn their basics to be able to succeed in the coming school years. December 20th Genesis and her family welcomed their new baby girl. Her name is Alexa. Genesis enjoys being a big sister but has had some difficulty making the transition from being an only child. Genesis’ mom has had some health problems and has been in and out of the hospital. She is doing better recently but continues to be careful. To begin the new school year, Genesis received her uniform, school shoes, backpack, and supplies. In December, Genesis and her family also received a water filter and a teaching on water borne illnesses. This will provide them with clean drinking water for the next several years.

July 2015

Genesis is doing well in her classes. Her teacher comments that she will be able to move up to second grade next year. We are proud of the progress she has been making especially in her reading ability. Genesis continues to attend the first grade class taught by New Song Staff. This has been good for her to get extra one-on-one help in her classes. She is improving everyday! The last few months have been hard on Genesis’ family. Her dad has been very sick as he has Chronic Kidney Disease. This disease has highs and lows and Genesis’ dad has been struggling lately. He is receiving treatments almost every week and has been getting better. His illness has been affecting the family as he was lacking energy and unable to do much. We are grateful that he has been feeling better. Please continue to pray for his improving health. Through her sponsorship, Genesis received her second uniform and school shoes for the last half of the year. She was also able to participate in school events celebrating Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, and International Kid’s Day. In July, Genesis celebrated her birthday and thanks to her sponsorship, she was able to have a small celebration with her family.

November 2015

Genesis finished the first grade at the beginning of December. This was her second year in the first grade and it allowed her to build a better foundation in reading and math. We are excited about her progress this year and she is happy to move on to second grade when school starts again in February. Genesis kept good grades all year and enjoyed going to school. Recently, her dad stopped being the pastor of the New Song church. He was having health and personal issues and it was clear he needed a break to focus on himself. The transition has been hard as Genesis and her family moved in with other family members in the same community. Her dad still participates in church activities and we are praying for the best for him. Genesis continues to attend Sunday school weekly. She recently changed classes because she turned seven years old in July. She really loved her old teacher, but is growing to love her new class.

April 2016

Genesis began the second grade in the beginning of February. Thanks to her sponsorship, she received her uniform, shoes, backpack, school supplies, and an athletic outfit to participate in her physical education class. Genesis has adjusted to the move her family made in October and continues to participate actively in Sunday school. We are so proud of how far Genesis has come last year. Her favorite class is Language Arts and loves to learn about separately words into their syllables. Genesis loves to learn how to read. She has improved so much in her reading comprehension. Her class has been working hard to practice copying sentences when the teacher dictates them. Genesis says that math is more difficult for her than language arts. Genesis’ mom started working harvesting sugar cane to help provide for the family. Her sponsorship takes a burden off of them and allows Genesis to study regularly with all the tools she needs.

Fall 2016

Genesis received her second uniform of the school year in July. She is halfway through her second grade year and is doing so well. Through her sponsorship, she received her needed school supplies including notebooks, crayons, pens, pencils, and a geometry set. She has improved in every area this year and it has been fun to watch her growth. Her favorite thing that she has worked to improve has been writing down all that her teacher says when she is dictating sentences. In May, Genesis’ class celebrated Mother’s Day and she really enjoyed getting to make projects to give to her mom. Genesis received advanced grades in math, language arts, and civics. She is such a smart girl and we are proud of how far she has come. In June, Genesis celebrated her birthday and was able to have a small celebration with her family through her sponsorship funds.
