Bio

Gerardo lives with his dad and three siblings. Their mother abandoned the children and now their father struggles to provide for his kids as a single dad. Their father is unable to work because he has chronic kidney disease. The family survives on his pension from the sugar cane company. Gerardo feels a lot of anger toward his mom for leaving him and his siblings, but he really appreciates how much his dad loves and cares for them. Gerardo started his first year of high school (US equivalent of 7th grade) when school bagan in February. His favorite classes are math and Spanish. In his free time, he likes to study and play baseball. Gerardo dreams of becoming a mechanical engineer to help his family.

Gerardo is so excited to be sponsored! He was able to receive his backpack, school supplies, uniform, and shoes. He has also been able to receive extra school supplies for end of the year class projects and investigations. He is enjoy school and loves his family.

Gerardo finished his first year of high school in November and began his second year in February. He is excited about starting school. Through a new initiative in the sponsorship program, Gerardo received a medical and dental check-up before starting the new school year in which he also received medicine at the New Song clinic. Through sponsorship, Gerardo also received his backpack, uniform, and school supplies to begin the new school year.

Gerardo received his first report card in May. His favorite classes are English and geography in which he is doing well. His geography class is only a semester long. Gerardo comments that he tries to sit apart from the other students so he can pay attention in class. He doesn’t like to mess around in class. In May, Gerardo’s aunt passed away. She was young, but passed away from cancer. Gerardo missed some school due to this and has been helping his dad during this time.

Gerardo received his second uniform and shoes for the last part of the school year. His sponsorship was able to cover the costs of a cultural school field trip to a city further away. He really enjoyed being able to participate in this activity. Gerardo began his semester long history class during this grading period. This class was traded in for his first semester geography class. In groups, he helped perform a drama illustrating different aspects of culture. This time of year is financially difficult for many families due to the lack of work that comes with it not being harvest season for the sugar cane fields. Gerardo’s family is no different in that they are struggling right now. Through sponsorship, he received food provisions to help his family. Gerardo was also able to go to the New Song clinic and receive needed dental care. He was so thankful to receive the gift you sent. He loves being able to read about your family and get to know you from a distance.

Gerardo is enjoying his third year of high school. He works hard and continues to walk distances to attend his school as there is no high school in his community. He received his first report card in May. His teachers comment that he is well behaved, pays attention, and attends class daily. However, he is failing his geography class and his now working hard to get his grades up. His top grades are in physical education (90%), and English (84%). Gerardo’s school had several activities celebrating Mother’s Day and International Kid’s Day. Through his sponsorship, he was able to participate in these events.

December 2015

Gerardo is working hard in his classes. He brought all of his grades up to passing. His top grades are in his vocational class and in history. Because Gerardo’s geography class and history class are both only semester long classes, Gerardo just finished studying geography and is now looking at history. He is doing well in this class despite the fact that many students struggle. Gerardo received his second uniform and pair of school shoes to finish out the second half of the year. Gerardo finishes the school year at the end of November and is looking forward to December and January when he is on break.

April 2016

Gerardo began his fourth year of high school in February. He received his uniform, shoes, backpack, school supplies and an athletic outfit to participate in his PE class. Through his sponsorship, he also received an id card that he can use to research at a local cyber café. This will allow him to complete his class investigations. Gerardo’s church recently moved to a new location. He and other members of the youth worked together to new two choreographed dances for a special youth service for all of New Song’s churches. Gerardo enjoyed serving and participating in this event.

Fall 2016

Gerardo continues to work hard in his fourth year of high school. He received a new uniform and pair of shoes for the second semester of classes. Gerardo has a 77% average overall in his first semester of classes. His best grades are 100% in PE and 80% in both English and Vocational Studies. Gerardo has been learning about quadratic equations in math. In Language Arts, he has been learning to complete summary tables. In English he has been learning how to write verbs in future tense. His sponsorship also provided him with a scientific calculator that he needed for his math class as well as additional school supplies in order to be successful in all of his classes. Thanks to his sponsorship, Gerardo was able to receive medical care and medicine through the New Song clinic.
