Bio

Gissell lives with her mom and younger sister. Gissell’s father left her mother and her. Her mom works long hours at a farm, but barely makes enough to meet their basic needs. She really struggles to care for her two girls as a single mom. Gissell will begin her 2nd year of high school (US equivalent of 8th grade) in February 2014. Her favorite class in school is mathematics. She dreams of modeling when she grows up.

April 21, 2015

Gissell finished her year of school in December and began again in the beginning of February. Like any teenager, she enjoyed her break from school and was not terribly excited to start again. However, she really enjoys being in her classes now and is getting back into the rhythm of things. At the end of the school year last year, Gissell’s sponsorship allowed her to participate in a celebration with her class. She ended the year with several school projects including creating a mural. Gissell also went to the New Song Clinic to see the doctor and was given medicine. In December, Gissell and her family received a water filter and a teaching on water borne illnesses. This will provide her and her family with clean drinking water for the next several years.

August 4, 2015

Gissell received her first report card of her third year of high school recently. We are proud of her work as many of her grades are high. Gissell’s top grades are in civics (94%), her vocational class (98%), and English (86%). She wants to bring up her grades in class like geography and math. In geography, she is working on learning the different regions on Nicaragua and their resources. Thanks to her sponsorship, she was able to print out several maps and study materials for her class. Her class celebrated Mother’s Day and International Kid’s Day. Gissell’s sponsorship was able to help pay for her to be able to participate in these events. She also received a separate uniform to allow her to take part in her PE class and a Spanish/English dictionary.

December 2015

Gissell continues to do well in her classes. Her top grades are in culture (100%), her vocational class (98%), and civics (84%). She has raised her grades in multiple classes on her third report card of the year. Because geography and history are both only semester long classes, Gissell finished geography class, and began studying history. Through her sponsorship, Gissell received her second uniform and pair of school shoes of the year as well as funds for school activities and a visit to the New Song Clinic. Gissell was able to go on a field trip to the capital city of Managua to see a science fair. Gissell celebrated her quincenera, her 15th birthday, this year. This is a big celebration in Hispanic culture and her sponsorship was able to help with the costs of this event.

April 2016

Gissell began her fourth year of high school in the beginning of February. As she finished out her third year in December, her top grade was in English (90%) and she struggled the most in her math class. Thanks to her sponsorship, Gissell received her uniform, school shoes, backpack, school supplies, and an athletic outfit to participate in her physical education class. Her favorite class this year is Spanish because she is learning different things especially related to the Nicaraguan poet, Ruben Dario. Her easiest class this year is her vocational class and her most difficult class continues to be math. Gissell is a bright student who works hard and wants to succeed. She loves learning about the history and geography of the different countries in Latin America and around the world. Gissell’s mom is not currently working and the family relies on help from other extended family members to provide for the family. Her sponsorship allows her to study continuously and empowers her to succeed in her classes.

Fall 2016

Gissell was so excited to receive your letter. She continues to work hard in her fourth year of high school. She has an 82% average overall in the first semester of classes. Her best grades are 98% in English and 95% in Physics. Her favorite class is chemistry and she has enjoyed learning the formulas of chemical compounds. She also completed a class project for her Natural Science class where they planted trees around the school property. Sponsorship has greatly benefitted Gissell allowing her to purchase books that she needs for three classes as well as a scientific calculator for her math class. Through her sponsorship, Gissell was able to participate in a field trip with her school to the capital city of Managua. Along with her academic success, Gissell has also stepped into a leadership role at New Song. She is working with the Sunday school program. She teaches Bible stories to several different classes working with children from 3-12 years old. Gissell absolutely loves this new role! We are proud of the growth we have seen in her this year.
