Bio

Grethel lives with her mom and two brothers. Her mom struggles to provide for her children as a single mom. She has been unable to find consistent work, but survives by washing and ironing clothes for other families in her neighborhood. Their house is in need of repairs and the children have nothing to eat except plain rice. Grethel is 3rd grade. Her favorite class is English. She also loves to paint. In her free time, Grethel likes to play or to dance as part of the girls dance ministry at New Song. She dreams of becoming a journalist when she grows up.

Grethel has been very blessed by sponsorship this season! She received a new uniform and shoes for the second semester of classes. Sponsorship also enabled her family to receive food provisions when her mother could not provide for her and medical care through the local clinic when she was feeling ill. Grethel loves school and is doing well in all of her classes. She is a very dedicated student.

Grethel completed 3rd grade in November. She is an excellent student! Thanks to sponsorship, she was able to receive extra school supplies for special class projects and food provisions when her family was without food. She received a medical and dental evaluation at the New Song clinic in preparation for the new school year. Grethel is excited to begin 4th grade in February.

Grethel received her uniform, shoes, backpack, and school supplies for the new school year. She is now in 4th grade and has been enjoying her classes. Her favorite class is English. She's loves learning the language. She also has been enjoying studying geometric figures in math class. As a focus on preventative health care, Grethel participated in a dental health teaching from one of New Song Clinic's dentists and received a free toothbrush. In May, Grethel and her family were able to celebrate her birthday with a pinata and dinner through her sponsorship.

October 28, 2014

Grethel received her new uniform and shoes for the second semester of classes. She continues to enjoy 4th grade. Grethel’s favorite class continues to be English. Currently they are learning new verbs in English, multiplication and division in math, reading news articles and informative texts in Language & Literature, studying animals in science, and learning about Nicaraguan culture in Social Studies. Grethel’s best grade is in Language and Literature (86%). Through her sponsorship, Grethel was able to participate in the International Children’s Day celebration at her school. Grethel’s mom has been taking agriculture classes, but still does not have consistent work. She washes clothes for neighbors and has recently started cleaning at the New Song missionary house to help provide for her family. Grethel’s sponsorship has provided food provisions for her family and helped to put food on the table when her mom was without income. Grethel continues to be a part of the New Song girls’ dance ministry and really loves to dance in worship.

Grethel finished her year in 4th grade. Her best grades were in PE (100), Cultural Studies (98), and Religion (89). Through her sponsorship, Grethel was able to participate in her school’s end of the year celebration. Grethel and her family participated in a public health teaching on water-born illnesses and received a free water filter for their family to ensure that they have clean drinking water at home. Grethel has been enjoying her vacation from school playing with her family and neighbors. Grethel will begin 5th grade in February 2015. Her mom is considering switching Grethel to a new school because her estranged father hasn’t been helping with her education as promised. She will be attending the local public school with her brothers rather than the semi-private school in the sugar cane company.

Grethel and her mom thought a great deal during the school vacation about switching her to a new school, but, in the end, they decided to keep Grethel at the semi-private school that she had been attending. Grethel started 5th grade in February 2015. She received her new uniform, shoes, backpack, and school supplies for the new school year. Grethel enjoys all of her classes, but English continues to be her favorite. Grethel has also been enjoying playing sports this year. She joined a community soccer league and her team even made it to the finals! Grethel has also started practicing baseball through a league at New Song. She has loved spending her free time playing and practicing for these teams.

December 2015

Grethel continues to do well in 5th grade. She has been learning to convert fractions to decimals, studying various ecosystems, and delving into Nicaraguan history as they celebrate their Independence day in mid-September. Through her sponsorship, Grethel was able to cook a traditional Nicaraguan dish for her Cultural Studies class. She also received a new uniform and pair of shoes for the second semester of classes. Grethel was able to visit the New Song clinic to receive free medical care and medication when she was ill earlier this year. Thank you so much for continuing to support her education.

April 2016

Grethel began 6th grade in February 2016. She received her uniform, shoes, backpack, school supplies and an athletic outfit to participate in her PE class. Grethel’s favorite class continues to be English. She loves learning the meaning and pronunciation of new words in English. Her most difficult class is math. This year sponsorship provided Grethel with an identification card that she can use at a local cyber café to complete class investigations. Grethel has been able to do research for class projects. Grethel desires to work hard each day in school so that one day she can become a successful journalist. Thanks to her sponsorship, Grethel was able to receive medical care and medicine through the New Song clinic.

Fall 2016

Grethel continues to work hard in 6th grade. Her best grade is 100% in Cultural Studies. Her most difficult class is math in which she has a 70%. Grethel still loves English class the best and has been proud of herself for developing greater understanding of English words. She received a new uniform and pair of shoes for the second semester of classes. Through her sponsorship, Grethel was able to participate in a pool party with her school. Her sponsorship covered her entrance fee to the pool. Grethel celebrated her 11th birthday in May. Her sponsorship allowed Grethel to have a small celebration at home with her family and neighbors. Grethel is looking forward to her graduation at the end of this year!
