Bio

Iris is five years old and lives with her older brother and cousin. She lives in a small house with many other extended family members as her neighbors. Her brother works in the fields when he is able to find work. When he is working, their basic needs can be met, but when he is unable to find work, he struggles to provide for the family. Iris has one other brother who does not live with her. Iris is in preschool and her favorite color is red. Her favorite part of school is when her class gets to color. She loves to look at, draw, and color trees. When Iris grows up, she wants to be a pediatrician. She has lots of extended family members and friends who live nearby and she loves to spend time playing with them.

Iris is so excited to be in this sponsorship program. She is an intelligent little girl, whose mischievous personality endears her to many. Iris is especially enjoying her math class, where they are learning to count, and can proudly list up to 29. She was able to take part in a toothbrushing clinic through her Sunday School class in May. She has received a new uniform, shoes, and school supplies through sponsorship.

Iris has been doing well in her classes this year, and understands all the material. She excels on written assignments, but due to increasing shyness in her classes, she has trouble with presenting to the class. She continues to enjoy math, and the class has moved on to basic addition and subtraction, which Iris can do effectively even in her head. Through sponsorship, she has received a new bookbag and food aid for her family, as they were going through a difficult time.

April 22, 2015

Iris finished first grade in December 2014. She is a B- student. Her best grades are in PE (90) and Cultural Studies (80). She is a sweet girl, but is extremely shy. Her shyness often keeps her from initiating new friendships or speaking up in class. Her closest friendships are with her family and she has a very loving relationship with her parents. Iris and her family received a free water filter for their home through the sponsorship program. This will give her family access to clean drinking water. Also, she and her family were able to receive food provisions when her older brother hadn’t received his payment from work. Iris started 2nd grade in February 2015. She received her uniform, shoes, backpack and school supplies. She was also able to buy an outfit for her PE classes. She has been learning to tell time in her math class. In Language & Literature, she has been learning new vocabulary and learning to write paragraphs.

July 2015

Iris has been doing well in 2nd grade. Her favorite class is Language & Literature. They have been learning to write different types of sentences and to form paragraphs. In math, they have been learning multiple-digit addition and learning to solve word problems. Through her sponsorship, Iris was able to purchase a book that she needed for class. Iris received her second uniform and set of shoes for the second semester of classes. She and her family were also able to receive food provisions when they were going through a difficult financial time.

November 2015

Iris has a C+ average overall in 2nd grade. She has B’s in most of her classes, but has struggled all year in Language & Literature. Iris and her class are in the midst of their end of the year exams. These exams will show if Iris has met the second grade standards and is ready to move on to third grade. Through her sponsorship, she has been able to attend two field trips with her school. She purchased two books that she needed for class. Iris was also able to celebrate her birthday by having a special dinner at home with her family.

April 2016

Iris passed her end of the year exams and moved on to third grade in February 2016. She received her uniform, shoes, backpack, school supplies and an athletic outfit to participate in her PE class. Iris has the same teacher that she had in second grade and is happy to be with her once again. Her favorite class is math. She enjoys learning more difficult skills now that she is in third grade. Although Iris says that she has learned to read more proficiently, Language & Literature continues to be her most difficult class. Iris celebrated her 8th birthday in January.

Fall 2016

Iris is working hard in third grade, and has improved greatly in her academics this year. She has a B average overall for the first semester of classes. Her best grades have been in Civics and PE. Her teacher says that Iris attends school faithfully and works hard in class. Iris continues to be extremely shy, but sweet girl. Iris received her new uniform and pair of shoes for the second semester of classes. She also received extra school supplies to complete her class assignments. Iris has begun to learn about division in math class. In Language Arts, they have been focusing on rhyming words and learning how to complete a summary table.
