Bio

Jelena lives with her mom and two younger siblings. Her dad abandoned the family for another woman in 2013. Since then her mom has really struggled to care for her kids as a single mom. Jelena and her brother share a small bed. Jelena and her brother have been staying with their aunt because their mom took a job working in the sugar cane fields. Her mom works long hours and needed someone to watch the kids.Jelena will begin 1st grade in February 2014. She is so excited to start elementary school. In her free time, she likes to play with her brothers and neighbors. Jelena dreams of becoming a doctor when she grows up.

There have been changes in Jelena’s family situation this year. Jelena’s older brother decided to go and live with their grandparents while Jelena and her younger brother remained in Santa Matilde with their mom and they stay with their aunt when their mom is working. Jelena just finished 1st grade. She was an excellent student this year. She maintained A’s in all of her classes. She loved her math class most of all. Jelena loved learning about addition and subtraction. She has been enjoying her vacation from school, but is excited to start 2nd grade in February 2015. She and her family are so excited and thankful that you've chosen to sponsor her.

Jelena has been enjoying her year in 2nd grade. In her math class, they have been learning to tell time. In Language & Literature, they have been focusing on synonyms and antonyms. The class has also been learning to write paragraphs. Her teacher says that Jelena is an excellent student who attends school faithfully and pays attention in class. Jelena received her uniform, shoes, backpack, and school supplies. She also received an athletic outfit so that she can fully participate in her PE class. Jelena and her family received a teaching on water borne illnesses and a water filter for their home. This will provide the family with clean drinking water for several years. When she is not in school, Jelena has been spending her time playing with her cousins and little brother.

December 2015

Jelena continues to do well in 2nd grade. She has an 88% average overall in her first semester of classes. Her best grades are in PE (100%) and Cultural Studies (88%). Jelena’s grade dropped in math during the second grading period. Their class began a new unit on multiplication. Multiplication is difficult for many students. Our sponsorship staff has encouraged Jelena to attend our weekly tutoring session to practice her multiplication skills and to understand the theory behind their multiplication tables. Her teacher says that she is an extremely intelligent young lady who attends school daily and participates well in class. Jelena received her uniform and shoes for the second semester of classes. She was also chosen to participate in the Independence Day parade with her school where she was honored as a top student. Jelena also enjoyed the opportunity to visit with you during your last trip to Nicaragua.

Jelena enjoyed the opportunity to visit with you once again during your trip to Nicaragua in January. She began the new school year in February. Jelena is excited to begin 3rd grade. She received her uniform, shoes, backpack, school supplies and an athletic outfit to participate in her PE class. Jelena has been reviewing her multiplication skills from second grade before moving on to more challenging math skills this year. In Civics she is learning about Nicaragua. Jelena is a bright young girl and continues to succeed in school thanks to her sponsorship.

Fall 2016

Jelena is working hard in third grade. The skills this year are more difficult than previous years and Jelena’s grades are lower this year than before. In the first grading period she had C’s in all her core classes, but was able to raise them to B’s by the second grading period. She has 100% in PE, Cultural Studies and Civics. Jelena was excited to learning folk dancing in her Cultural Studies class. Through her sponsorship, Jelena’s class received a water bucket so that the students have water to drink during the school day. She was also able to cook a traditional Nicaraguan meal to present in her Cultural Studies class. As a focus on preventative health care, Jelena’s sponsorship provided her a dental cleaning, fluoride treatment, and dental hygiene teaching from the dentist at the New Song clinic. Jelena enjoyed the opportunity to visit with your family once again in June. It means a lot to her that you are able to come and visit so often.
