Joel is so excited to be sponsored, and loved getting to meet his sponsors in August - they had a great time getting to know each other, and still talk about the visit! Joel is working hard in school, and was able to go on a field trip with his classmates to Nagarote to get to learn more about what Nicaragua has to offer. Joel attends community English classes, and has joined the youth group at his local church. Through sponsorship, Joel was able to see the doctor and receive treatment for an asthma flare up. He was also provided food aid as his family is facing difficult times.

Joel has had some trouble with his classes this school year, but passed for the year. He is excited to be going on to eighth grade in February, and following in his oldest brother's footsteps to high school graduation. He is enjoying playing the guitar and getting lessons from his father, and getting more time off to run around with his friends. Joel was able to go spend some time with his extended family over the holidays, as well. Joel and his family also attended a water safety seminar in December, at which they were given water filters by an outside donor through New Song. This will provide them access to clean drinking water for up to 3 years.

Joel started his 2nd year of high school in February 2015. He received his uniform, shoes, backpack, and school supplies. He also received an athletic outfit so that he is able to fully participate in his PE class. Joel has a C average overall with his best grades in Cultural Studies (95%) and Language & Literature (77%). Through his sponsorship, Joel was able to celebrate his birthday together with his family and friends. This has been a difficult few months for Joel’s family because his mom was diagnosed with the early stages of chronic kidney disease at the beginning of the year. She was forced to take time off of work to recuperate her strength, but has now begun to work again. His dad struggled with some health issues as well while he was working construction on the new church building in Nuevo Amanecer. He had to step down from this position. In April, he was able to take a temporary guard job at New Song which helped the family while Joel's mom was off work. Also his sponsorship was able to provide food provisions for the family while both parents were unable to work.

December 2015

Joel continues to do well in his second year of high school. He has a 79% average overall in his first semester. His best grades are in Science (100%) and Language & Literature (87%). Although Language Literature is one of his highest grades, Joel says that it is one of his most difficult classes. They have been studying the Greek roots of words. Joel’s favorite class is math. His class has been doing a unit of trigonometry and Joel finds this type of math easy to understand. Joel received his uniform and shoes for the second semester of classes. Through his sponsorship, he was also able to complete a special class project, attend a school field trip to Managua, and honor his dad through his school’s celebration for Father’s Day. Please continue to pray for Joel and his family. His mom continues to struggle with her kidney disease. Her blood levels are low and she has been experiencing some pain, but the family continues to display joy and to trust the Lord’s healing and provision.

April 2016

Joel began his third year of high school in the beginning of February. Thanks to his sponsorship, he received his uniform, shoes, backpack, school supplies, and an athletic outfit to participate in his physical education class. This year, Joel has been coming out of his shell more. He is a sweet student and has even helps teach Sunday school. Joel has been learning how to play the guitar and plays for church services. Geography is Joel’s favorite subject because he loves to learn about where the continents are in the world. In math, Joel has been learning about statistics and frequency tables. Math is his most difficult class. We are so proud of how well Joel is doing in his classes. He has been working very hard to not only pass but to succeed. Joel’s mom had to stop working due to her kidney disease and his dad is working at a transportation business. Because of Joel’s sponsorship, he is able to have all the tools he needs to succeed.

Fall 2016

Joel received his second uniform and pair of school shoes of the year in July. He is halfway through his third year of high school. It has been amazing to watch Joel’s academic and personal growth over the last few years. His top grades are in his vocational class and culture. School is not something that comes easily for Joel, but he has decided that he will not let that stop him. Joel works hard to keep up his grades to make sure that he passes everything. In math, Joel is learning algebra and in Spanish, his class has been having round table discussions about the life and works of Ruben Dario. At his high school, the students study geography in the first semester and have now moved onto studying the history of the ancient civilizations of Mesopotamia, Egypt, India, and China. In May, Joel attended four training sessions for people interested in teaching Sunday school. He has done a great job challenging himself in things he feels uncomfortable. Joel has been serving as a Sunday school teacher and still learning a lot about playing the bass for church services. In May, Joel decided to get baptized! We are so excited about this next step in his faith!
