Juan Francisco is an active kid, always laughing and joking around. He lives with his mother and an older brother, and his extended family is very tight-knit, all living together in the same complex. He and his cousin, Cristhian Roberto, just started first grade together; both are very hard workers and look forward to being firemen when they grow up. Juan Francisco’s mother sells food near Central Park, and he can often be found keeping her company outside of school hours. April 2016

Juan began second grade in February. He received his new uniform, shoes, backpack, school supplies and an athletic outfit to participate in his PE class. Juan’s teacher says that he comes to class daily and works hard. In Language & Literature he has been learning to write sentences with new vocabulary words. In Math, he has been learning to tell time and learning about place value. Juan is a sweet, joyful boy who wants to do well in everything he does. He also loves to spend his afternoons in the park helping his mom to sell water and other drinks.

Fall 2016

Juan enjoys school, but he is struggling in second grade. Juan’s teacher says that he is a very hardworking student. Juan comes to school every day and stays after class to receive extra tutoring with his teacher. One of our sponsorship interns, worked with Juan one-on-one to help improve his phonics, reading comprehension and number sense. Despite this extra help, Juan continues to struggle especially with phonics. His teacher has said that if Juan’s phonics skills do not drastically improve in the next grading period that it will be in his best interest to repeat second grade next year. The transition from second to third grade is a major change in literacy development. Second grade curriculum is still split between phonics and comprehension. By third grade, students are expected to have mastered phonics and focus solely on comprehension. If Juan still needs more phonics work, repeating second grade could be vital to his long-term academic success. Juan received his new uniform and shoes for the second semester of classes. Thanks to his sponsorship, Juan was also able to celebrate his 10th birthday with a small celebration at home with his family and friends.
