Bio

Julissa lives with her mom, dad, and three siblings. Their family lives in a home made of sheets of tin. Many parts of their home are rusting and rain often enters through holes in the roof. Julissa is currently in preschool. This is Julissa's first year of school and she is so excited to be attending preschool. Before receiving sponsorship, Julissa wasn't in school because her family couldn't afford to send her. She loves to learn and especially to draw. In her free time, she loves to come to the church and play with her sister, neighbors, and the New Song staff. Julissa will now have the opportunity to study and dream for a better future.

April 16, 2015

Julissa finished her year in 1st grade. Although she started the year doing very well in her classes she was memorizing information rather than actually learning how to sound out words and read. As the school year continued, Julissa began to fall behind in her Language and Literature class. Her teacher is unsure that Julissa is ready to move on to 2nd grade and make the switch from phonics to comprehension. She will be taking a cumulative skills exam at the beginning of February to determine whether or not she will move on to 2nd grade or repeat first grade. We believe that it would be beneficial to Julissa to remain in first grade and create a better foundation in phonics before moving on to the new grade level. In the last couple months of school, Julissa was able to receive extra school supplies that she needed, complete special class projects, and participate in her school’s end of the year celebration. Julissa and her family participated in a public health teaching through the church where they learned about water-born illnesses and received a free water filter for their family to ensure that they have clean drinking water at their home. Julissa is enjoying her vacation, but is already excited to start the new school year.

May 29, 2015

Julissa began the school year in the beginning of February. She was held back to repeat the first grade. We think this will give her a great opportunity to develop a stronger foundation on her basic reading skills. She received her first report card of the year and is passing all of her classes. Julissa has been attending a weekly class taught New Song staff specifically for first graders. We have been working on sounding out words and memorizing consonants sounds. Julissa has received needed school supplies throughout the year in order to help her succeed. Thanks to a visiting team to New Song, Julissa was given a pair of flip flops that she can use to play instead of her school shoes.

December 2015

Julissa is working so hard this year. We are proud of the progress she has made especially in her reading. Julissa attends weekly tutoring by New Song Staff to improve and she attends every week. She is getting much better at recognizing words and correctly writing down words that are dictated to her. She has also been working on understanding the basic concepts of addition and subtraction which have helped her in her classes. On her second report card of the year, Julissa received advanced grades in language arts, culture, physical education, and social studies. Through her sponsorship, Julissa received her second uniform and pair of school shoes of the year and was able to go on two class field trips including one to the zoo in a neighboring city. Julissa received funds to complete class assignments and extra school supplies.

April 2016

Julissa successfully completed first grade in November. We are so proud of her hard work and the progress that she made! Julissa began 2nd grade in February 2016. She received her uniform, shoes, backpack, school supplies, and an athletic outfit to participate in her PE class. Julissa continues to faithfully attend tutoring with our sponsorship staff. Julissa’s favorite class is math where she has been practicing addition and subtraction as well as learning to tell time. Language & Literature continues to be her most difficult class although she has worked diligently to improve her reading and writing. As she continues to work hard and attend tutoring, Julissa will continue to grow in her reading and math skills. At the beginning to the year, Julissa’s older sister gave birth to a baby girl. Julissa and her older sister, Makeyling, love walking to visit their sister and niece in the nearby community where they live.

Fall 2016

Julissa received her new uniform and shoes for the second semester of classes. She also received additional school supplies that she needs in order to be successful in her classes. Julissa had stopped attending Sunday afternoon tutoring with our sponsorship staff for a while. She is doing well with addition, but is still struggling with her reading. She has moved beyond reading simple words and is now able to read books. She is making improvements, but still struggles with decoding and lacks comprehension. She has satisfactory grades in both Math and Language Arts. Thanks to her sponsorship, Julissa was able to participate in a field trip with her class.
