Karla is so smart! She continues to be an outstanding student especially in math. She also loves to study and do her work. Karla comes to weekly tutoring at the Santa Matilde church, and our biggest problem is that she gets bored and wants us to give her more work that challenges her. At the end of the year, Karla was practicing large number multiplication and working on long division. While these are topics that have proven to be challenging for some students, Karla excelled. Karla’s teacher comments that she is extremely intelligent and well behaved in class, though can be chatty sometimes. She is present in class every day and always on time. Karla’s sponsorship provided her with extra school supplies as well as medicine when she was sick. Unfortunately, there was a virus going around all of the communities and it also fell to Karla. She was running a fever and having stomach problems. She was able to see the doctor at New Song Clinic and be treated for this illness. To finish the school year, her school had a small party for the class. Her sponsorship was able to cover the costs of her participation in this event.

We are so proud of Karla. She is so smart and caring. She continues to work very hard to do well in her fifth grade year. Even though the weekly New Song tutoring stops after fourth grade, Karla continues to attend and helps tutor. Occasionally, she runs her own tutoring group, helping those students who are younger than her. We have been working with her to give special, take-home assignments in order to challenge her academically. She participates in Sunday school and often leads songs for the entire group. To begin the school year, Karla received her uniform, backpack, school shoes, and supplies. She celebrated her birthday in January and her sponsorship was able to fund a small celebration with her family. Karla received her annual dental cleaning and fluoride treatment at the New Song Clinic. She was so proud to not have any cavities or need any extra work done!

July 2015

Karla is doing so well in her classes. On her first report card, her grades were all above 98%. She continues to work hard and strive for top grades in her classes. Through her sponsorship, Karla received funds to participate in an event at her school creating traditional Nicaraguan dishes. She was also able to participate in her school’s Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, and International Kid’s Day festivities. Karla has been so helpful with sponsorship’s weekly tutoring sessions. She is willing to help and often teaches a class or tutors other students individually. Karla’s sponsorship provided her with a separate uniform for her physical education class.

November 2015

Karla is such a smart girl! She continues to amaze us every day with her commitment and excitement to learn. Karla is one of two students who are tied for the top grades in the entire sponsorship program. Her grade average is 98%. Karla took end of the year cumulative exams given by the government. On the first round of testing she passed but didn’t excel. We spent time encouraging her and giving her test taking strategies. On the next round of tests, she scored a 92% on her math portion. We are proud of her and knew she could do it! Karla is excited to go onto the sixth grade when school starts at the beginning of February. Through her sponsorship, Karla was able to participate in the September Independence Day parade as a top student in her class.

April 2016

Karla started her sixth and final year of elementary school in the beginning of February. She is doing so well! Karla is a great student with the sweetest heart. She loves her family and helps in the church. Thanks to her sponsorship, she received her uniform, backpack, shoes, school supplies, and an athletic outfit to be able to participate in her physical education class. Her favorite class in school is math because she understands it easily. Her most difficult class is social studies as they have a lot of homework in creating maps of various countries. Karla’s family recently had to move off of their land. Fortunately, they were given land in another area of Santa Matilde. The church worked together to raise money to help them with their costs and provided the manpower to build the house. Karla also has been playing baseball in New Song’s baseball league. Thank you for your support of Karla. She loves you both dearly and asks about you often.

Fall 2016

Karla received her second uniform of the school year in July. She is halfway through her last year of elementary school and will celebrate her graduation in December. We are so proud of how well she continues to do in her classes! Her top grades are in culture, physical education, civics, her vocational class, and social studies (all 100%). Her lowest grade is in math and she is still doing very well with a grade of 90%. She has really enjoyed learning about how to write expositions and improving her reading and writing. Her favorite project this year was making hearts, flowers, and arts and crafts for Mother’s Day. Karla says that she wants to do well so she can be someone in life and to make the people proud who have supported her. Her school also had a school-wide event celebrating typical Nicaraguan foods. Sponsorship helped provide the funds for this event and the church came together to cook for the school. Karla also received her annual dental cleaning and fluoride treatment through the New Song Dental Clinic. Recently, her community was without running water for a couple of weeks. Sponsorship provided the local school with a bucket for every classroom so that the students could have drinking water while in class.
