Bio

Kevin lives with his mom, eight siblings, grandparents, and uncle. Kevin’s mom struggles to provide for her children as a single mother. His mom is currently unemployed. Within the entire extended family, only Kevin’s uncle is working and he only works 6 months of the year (November-May) harvesting sugar cane. Kevin is currently in his first year of secondary school (US equivalent of 7th grade).  His favorite class is mathematics. In his free time, he likes to play soccer. When he grows up, Kevin dreams of becoming a police officer.

Kevin received his school uniform, shoes, backpack, and school supplies. Kevin has continued to raise his grades each grading period. His highest grades are in PE, Cultural Studies, Technical Studies, and math. His favorite class is math where he has been learning about measuring in cubic meters. He was able to attend a school field trip in Managua through his sponsorship. Kevin is excited to finish his first year of secondary school and is looking forward to his second year starting in February.

Kevin finished his first year of high school in December and began his second year in February. He is excited to begin classes. Kevin continues to be a part of English classes taught provided by the student programs and New Song staff. He loves his English class in school and does very well in it. Kevin says that he is one of the top students in English at his school. Through his sponsorship, Kevin received his backpack, uniform, and school supplies to begin the new year.

Kevin has been doing well in his classes so far this year, and although he did struggle with geography in the first quarter, he has managed to pull his grade up to an 83 in the second quarter. He is excited and grateful to be continuing with the English class provided through the student sponsorship program as learning English is a huge opportunity for these students. Sponsorship also empowered Kevin to take part in a school field trip to Leon this semester. The students visited a botanical garden and were able to learn more about their local flora.

Kevin has been busy this past semester and although he is doing well in the rest of his classes, his English grade has slipped to below passing for the quarter, and he will have to work hard to pull it up before the end of the school year. In order to have more time to invest in his school work, he has stopped playing on his soccer team, but he is still able to play pick-up games whenever possible. He really appreciated the soccer cleats sent to him! Kevin's favorite class at the moment is math, where they are learning geometry. In addition to receiving a second uniform and set of shoes to last him through the end of the year, sponsorship allowed Kevin to get dental work done. He has been enjoying watching horror movies as of late, as well as playing with his pet rabbit, Margarito.

Kevin finished his 2nd year of high school in December. Kevin worked hard this year and ended the year with a C average overall. His best grades were in PE (100), Science (90), and Technical Studies (80). English is his most difficult class. He struggled in English this past year, but was able to pass for the year. Through his sponsorship Kevin was able to receive additional dental work and medical care through the New Song clinic. He and his family attended a public health teaching on water-born illnesses and received a free water filter to ensure that they have clean drinking water at their home. Kevin began his 3rd year of high school in February 2015. He received his new uniform, shoes, backpack and school supplies to begin the new school year.

June 2015

Kevin has been enjoying his 3rd year of high school. He has a C+ average in the first grading period with his best grades in PE (100%), Technical Studies (88%) and Language & Literature (85%). His sponsorship has been able to help him purchase a scientific calculator for his math class. Kevin and his family were able to receive food provisions when they were facing a difficult financial time.

December 2015

Kevin continues to work hard as he completes his third year of high school. He received his new uniform and shoes for the second semester of classes. He was also able to participate in a field trip with his school. His sponsorship covered the cost of his participation. Kevin was failing English in his third grading period, but is still passing for the year. During this last grading period, English has been difficult to Kevin because they have been focusing on pronunciation of conversations. Kevin finds English pronunciation much more difficult than reading and writing. He is working hard and is already bringing that grade back up. His best grades are 100% in PE, 95% in Science, and 87% in math. Math is Kevin’s favorite class. They have been measuring angles and determining perimeter, area and volume of shapes. Kevin enjoys this area of study.

Kevin began his fourth year of high school in February. He received his uniform, shoes, backpack, school supplies and an athletic outfit to participate in his PE class. Kevin has been trying to separate himself from friends that were distractions to him in school last year. He wants to be more focused on his studies this year. He is working hard and says that all of the classes are easy when you pay attention in class. In math, he is studying algebra and really enjoys this area of study. He is also taking chemistry and physics for the first time and is doing well in these classes. Kevin is beginning to think more about his future and the doors that a good education will open for him.

Fall 2016

Kevin has been struggling in his fourth year of high school. His top grades are 100% in Vocational Studies, 95% in PE, and 81% in Math. At the end of the first semester, Kevin has failing grades in Language Arts and English, but is working to pull these grades up. Kevin and his mom were having difficulties covering his transportation costs to and from school this year. His sponsorship was able to provide him transport money so that he is able to take the bus to and from school each day. Kevin received a new uniform and pair of shoes for the second semester of classes. Thanks to his sponsorship, Kevin was able to receive a dental cleaning and fluoride treatment through the clinic at New Song Mission. The dentist also taught Kevin proper dental hygiene techniques.
