Bio

Marileyssi lives with her mom and three brothers. Her mom has been unable to find work. She works odd jobs washing clothes for people in the neighborhood, but struggles to provide for her four children as a single mom. She is often without food for her children and has to seek help from her extended family. Marileyssi says that her family is wonderful and that she knows her mom loves her because “she cooks for me and my brothers, always fixes my hair, and helps me with my homework.” The entire family is a very active part of our church family. Marileyssi will begin 6th grade in February 2014 and will have her primary school graduation in November 2014. She was recently honored as one of the top students in her class. She loves to study math. In her free time, Marileyssi plays at the church and grows plants at her house. She dreams of becoming a teacher so that she can “teach others everything that they do not know”.

April 22, 2015

Marileyssi finished her year in 6th grade with a C average overall. She celebrated her graduation from elementary school on December 12, 2014. Her sponsorship covered the costs of her participation in this ceremony. Marileyssi was so excited to celebrate her accomplishment and to celebrate alongside her friends and family. During the break from school, Marileyssi participated in a community English class for children. She really enjoyed learning some English and is proud to show off her certificate of completion from this class. Marileyssi and her family attended a public health teaching at New Song where they learned about water-born illnesses and received a water filter for their family to give them access to clean drinking water at home. Marileyssi started high school in February 2015. She received her new uniform, shoes, backpack, and school supplies. Marileyssi was nervous to make this transition, but excited about new challenges and adventures in high school. Marileyssi has been struggling some with the transition of elementary school to high school. She been arguing often with other girls in her class and getting distracted by boys. She is intelligent, but has been allowing herself to be pulled into teenage drama. Our sponsorship staff has been talking with her and encouraging her to focus on her classes.

July 2015

Marileyssi continues to struggle with her attitude in high school. She has gotten in trouble a couple of times for fighting with other girls in her class. We continue to give her advice in regards to her relationships and choices. In her first grading period Marileyssi had a C average overall. Her best grades are in PE (84%) and Civics (82%). Her most difficult classes are English, Geography and Language & Literature. Through her sponsorship, Marileyssi has been able to complete class investigations, create maps for her geography class, and participate in Mother’s Day and Children’s day celebrations at her school. Marileyssi has received her new uniform and shoes for the 2nd semester of classes. Sponsorship has also helped her family outside of her academic needs. Marileyssi received free medical care through the New Song clinic. Her family was also able to receive food provisions when they were facing a difficult financial time. Marileyssi was excited to be a part of her cousin, Junieth’s, wedding in April. Marileyssi participated as a bridesmaid and her brothers were groomsmen.

November 2015

Marileyssi finished her first year of high school. She is now doing much better in her attitude, school conduct and grades. Her best grades are now 100% in both PE and Civics and 86% in English. We are proud of the decision that Marileyssi has made to separate herself from the girls with whom she had been fighting and to focus more intently on her studies. Through her sponsorship she was able to attend two class field trips as well as complete investigations and special class assignments. Sponsorship also provided free medical care and medicine to Marileyssi and allowed her to celebrate her birthday together with her family.

April 2016

Marileyssi began her second year of high school in February 2016. She received her uniform, shoes, backpack, school supplies and an athletic outfit to participate in her PE class. Marileyssi still loves her English class the best. She likes learning the meaning and pronunciation of new words. Currently they have been learning descriptive vocabulary to describe people. Her most difficult class is math. As Marileyssi enters into her teenage years, she has been struggling in her relationship with her mom. Marileyssi’s mom really loves her and continues to offer guidance to her daughter on navigating these difficult years. Pray for Marileyssi during this transitional time that she will make good decisions and continue to focus on her education.

Fall 2016

Marileyssi was having some problems at school and was being bullied by an older girl. She and her mom made the decision to change schools. Marileyssi is now attending a different public high school in Chichigalpa. She likes her new school and has made several new friends. Marileyssi still enjoys her English class the most and loves to learn the pronunciation of new words. Marileyssi had a difficult time with geography in the first semester. At the end of the semester, she had a failing grade in that class, but has already taken an exam to see if she could meet the requirements to pass geography for the year. She passed her exam. In the second semester she has begun to take history in place of geography. She is currently learning about the Mayan, Incan, and Aztec civilizations. Marileyssi received her new uniform and shoes for the second semester of classes. Sponsorship allowed Marileyssi to purchase a book that she needed for class. She was also able to build a model bone for her science class and complete a special project for her Language Arts class. She was also able to attend a school field trip to the capital city of Managua.
