Bio

Mauricio lives with his mom and younger brother. His father passed away in 2012 in an accident at the beach. His mom now struggles to provide for her two boys as a single mom. She works in the sugar cane fields during planting and harvesting season. When she isn’t employed in the sugar cane fields, she works washing clothes for neighbors. Mauricio is currently in his 2nd year of secondary school (US equivalent of 8th grade). His favorite class is science. He also loves computers and enjoys visiting cyber cafes in his free time. Mauricio dreams of becoming a professor when he grows up because he really enjoys teaching others.

August 25, 2014

Mauricio is in his third year of high school. He enjoys school and has a B average overall. His best grades are in Natural Science (97%), Cultural Studies (94%, and Spanish (86%). Math is his most difficult class. Mauricio continues to serve in the church as a Sunday school teacher for the 5-6 year olds. He really loves working with the Sunday school program and has even volunteered to go to one of our church plants on Saturdays to help train their Sunday school teachers. Mauricio said, “With the teachings that we receive on Friday mornings and then turning around and teaching the kids on Sunday, I’m growing a lot spiritually. I find that I am getting into the Word more on my own. As I teach the kids, I am learning too.” Mauricio’s sponsorship has helped him immensely in the last couple of months. Mauricio was able to receive medical care through the New Song clinic when he had a fever and sore throat. Sponsorship also aloud him to receive extra help to participate in field trips, class projects, and complete investigations. Mauricio and his family were able to receive food provisions during a difficult time. Additionally, Mauricio received his school uniform, backpack, school supplies, and shoes for the school year.

Mauricio continues to excel in school as he finishes his third year of high school. He was honored as a top student in his class through his school’s Independence Day march. His sponsorship helped provide for the cost of this activity. Mauricio’s best grades are in Civics (100), Natural Science (100), and Geography (91). He has been able to receive extra school supplies to help with special class projects. Mauricio continues to serve in the church as a Sunday school teacher. He is an intelligent and hard working young man. We are really proud of him.

April 22, 2015

Mauricio finished his 3rd year of high school in December 2014. His grades dropped slightly in the last grading period. Mauricio’s mom was ill during that time and the difficulties with their family distracted him in his school. He still finished the year with a B- average overall. During his mom’s illness, sponsorship was able to provide him and his family with food provisions. Thankfully, she is now doing better. In December, Mauricio and his family attended a public health teaching on water-born illnesses and received a water filter to ensure that they have access to clean drinking water at their home. Mauricio started his 4th year of high school in February 2015. He received his uniform, shoes, backpack and school supplies. He is enjoying his classes so far this year. Mauricio continues teaching Sunday school. He is in charge of the 7-9 year old boys. Mauricio has also started sharing scripture during the Sunday church services. Pastor Alex is working with Mauricio to see him continue to grow spiritually.

July 2015

Mauricio is now in his fourth year of high school. This year’s classes are more difficult than the previous year. In his first grading period Mauricio had a C average overall. His best grades are in English (81%) and Physics (80%). His most difficult class is Language & Literature. Mauricio’s sponsorship has been able to help him greatly to complete class investigations, create maps for his geography class and participate in special class projects. Mauricio also received a book that he needs for his class. Mauricio was also able to participate in Mother’s day and Children’s day celebrations at his school. Mauricio received a new uniform and pair of shoes for the second semester of classes. He continues to work with the Sunday school program at his church in Candelaria. Mauricio is growing in his faith and serving faithfully in the church. Sponsorship also provided Mauricio with free medical care and medication through the New Song clinic.

December 2015

Mauricio continues to work with the Sunday school program teaching the 7-9 year old boys. He finished his fourth year of high school in December 2015. Mauricio completed the year with a C average overall. His best grade was 90% in Physics. Mauricio enjoys this class greatly and says that the professor explains the material well. Through his sponsorship, Mauricio was able to complete special class projects, cook a typical Nicaraguan dish for his Cultural Studies class, and attend three field trips with his school. He was also able to celebrate his 18th birthday with his friends and family. Mauricio was so excited to be able to celebrate his birthday. Thank you for providing that for him.

Mauricio began his fifth and final year of high school in February 2016. He is thrilled to be in his senior year! Mauricio received his uniform, shoes, backpack, school supplies and an athletic outfit to participate in his PE class. Through his sponsorship he was also able to purchase books that he needed for both his biology and vocational studies class. Mauricio’s favorite class is sociology because he likes learning about people and their social relationships. His most difficult class is English where they have been working to translate entire biographies. Mauricio has been learning this year that every goal entails effort, responsibility, perseverance and dedication. We are proud that he is learning these important truths now. He is anxious to complete his last year of high school and hopes to study in the university next year. Mauricio continues to work with the Sunday school program at New Song Mission and has begun to teach a new class this year. He is now teaching the 9-10 year old boys.

Fall 2016

Mauricio continues to work hard in his senior year of high school. He is so excited for his graduation in December! Sponsorship helped Mauricio to work on a project and experiment to participate in his school’s science fair. He was also able to travel to the capital city of Managua on a school field trip to attend the national science fair. Sponsorship also provided Mauricio with a scientific calculator as well as a book that he needed for one of his classes. Mauricio received his new uniform and pair of shoes for the second semester of classes. This is the final uniform and pair of shoes that he will receive. Mauricio has a C average overall in his first semester of classes. His highest grades and favorite classes are his science classes, both Biology and Natural Science. He has a 90% average in both classes. Mauricio has been struggling some in his walk with the Lord. He decided that he would like to step down from his position teaching Sunday school and focus on strengthening his own faith. Please pray for him during this time.
