Her favorite classes are math and natural science. She dreams of becoming a doctor.

June 2015

Mayerling and her family are very excited to begin in the Educate Nica sponsorship program! She is in her first year of high school, which can be a difficult transition for many students. Mayerling has been struggling focusing on her academics and maintaining friends who are good influences on her. Her teacher comments that she is a bright student who can succeed when she puts her mind to something. Mayerling received her backpack, uniform, school shoes, and start-up supplies. Her school had several activities celebrating Mother’s Day and International Kid’s Day. Thanks to her sponsorship, she was able to participate in these events. Thank you for this investment in her life!

December 2015

Mayerling is working hard in her classes so that she passes on to her second year of high school. Mayerling is struggling some as she enters her early teenage years to decide who she wants to be. She is feeling a lot of peer pressure and is going to have to make hard decisions as she enters this stage of life. Mayerling’s favorite class is geography even though it is only a semester long class and her class moved on to studying history. Math is her least favorite subject, she says, because it is not interesting to her. Mayerling participated in the Independence Day parade as part of her school's marching band. She had a lot of fun getting to be a part of this. Through her sponsorship, Mayerling received her uniform and pair of school shoes to get her through the last half of the school year. She was also able to go on a field trip with her class and have some minor dental work done at the New Song Clinic.

April 2016

Mayerling began her second year of high school at the beginning of February. Thanks to her sponsorship, she received her uniform, backpack, shoes, school supplies, and an athletic outfit to be able to participate in her physical education class. In math, Mayerling’s class is learning about graphing and she works to create various kinds of graphs. Mayerling is learning about the countries in North and South America. She has also been learning about the works of the Nicaraguan author and poet, Ruben Dario.

Fall 2016

Mayerling received her second uniform of the year in July. She is halfway through her second year of high school and has been struggling with not falling into peer pressure and paying attention in her classes. She is a smart girl but has a hard time not talking to her friends in class. After the lower grades of her first report card, sponsorship staff encouraged her to do the best she could do. On her second report card, Mayerling raised her grades in math, English, culture, physical education, her vocational class, geography, and science. We know that she can do well if she works hard. Her favorite thing that she has learned so far is how to take care of the earth’s plants. In math, Mayerling’s class is studying polygons and in language arts she is learning about the Greek roots of words. In high school, the students study geography for the first semester and history for the second semester. Mayerling’s class has moved on to the history portion of the year and they are learning about the Incan, Mayan, and Aztec civilizations. As Nicaraguan independence day approaches in September, Mayerling has been studying the national anthems of five various Central American countries.
