Bio

Mayqueling lives with her mom, dad, and three siblings. Their family lives in a home made of sheets of tin. Many parts of their home are rusting and rain often enters through holes in the roof. Mayqueling is currently in 3rd grade. Her favorite class is Spanish. She is very smart and will practice the English that she is learning in school with our short-term teams. Mayqueling plans to become either a doctor or a teacher when she grows up.

July 12, 2013

Makeyling has received her uniform, shoes, backpack and school supplies. She was SO excited about her new uniform! Last year she attended school all year without a uniform (which most children are too embarrassed to do). This year she has been so proud to walk to school in her very own uniform. She is in 3rd grade and loving her classes! Lisa Smith, the sponsorship coordinator in Nicaragua, was able to visit her in class and was told Makeyling is doing well. Thanks to sponsorship, Makeyling has also been able to receive extra school supplies that her teacher was requesting for special projects and will be able to fully participate with her class.

November 8, 2013

Mayqueling is doing well in school. She goes to school everyday and absolutely loves it. Through her sponsorship, Mayqueling received her second uniform and shoes for the last semester of classes. Thanks to sponsorship, she was also able to receive dental care through New Song clinic. Mayqueling also received extra supplies that were required for her school. She loves school and really wants to be able to do everything her school asks. She is diligent to make sure that she has what she needs to succeed. Her school recently held an activity in which all the students brought in a traditional Nicaraguan dish. Mayqueling had a lot of fun participating in this activity and her sponsorship was able to cover the cost of the ingredients she needed. Mayqueling is passing all of her classes. Her top grades are in Civics (86%) and Culture (92%). Please be praying for Mayqueling. She is currently receiving medical care to treat dengue fever.

April 2, 2014

Makeyling started 4th grade this year. She enjoys her new classes and teacher. She is still in class with her best friend, Dalila. Through sponsorship, she received her new uniform, shoes, backpack, and school supplies for the new year. Makeyling also received extra help to participate in a special class project. Sponsorship also provided dental care to fill some cavities at the New Song clinic.

July 14, 2014

Mayqueling loves school and is enjoying her fourth grade year. She is fiercely independent and such a leader. Mayqueling’s top grade is in culture (95%) and civics (85%), and math is her favorite class. In her math class, she is learning division and multiplication. Her Spanish class recently did a unit on poetry. Her class read and wrote different types of poetry. Mayqueling’s teacher comments that although she is very intelligent, some of her grades are lower because she doesn’t complete all school assignments. Through sponsorship, Mayqueling received help for a special Mother’s Day event at her school. At Sunday school, Mayqueling participated in a dental hygiene teaching hosted by the sponsorship program in partnership with New Song Clinic.

October 28, 2014

Mayqueling received her second uniform and shoes for the last part of the school year. In October, her school gave her the third report card for the year. She has raised her grades in science, Spanish, and social studies. Her top grades are in civics, culture, and physical education. Mayqueling’s conduct grade in her class is the best it has been all year (93%)! Her favorite class is currently math, she says, because it is the hardest. They are learning about division and multiplication. In her Spanish class, she is learning scientific vocabulary and how to apply that to her writing. Mayqueling’s older sister recently went to live with her aunt in a nearby village. This has pushed Mayqueling to step up into more responsibilities in her house. Her sponsorship helped to cover the costs of several needed medical exams and medicines when she was sick. She celebrated her birthday in July and, through her sponsorship, her family was able to have a small dinner for her. This time of year is particularly difficult for many people in the community. We are nearing the end of six months of unemployment for those who harvest sugar cane. Mayqueling and her family have received food provisions to help them through this time. She and her sister also received food thanks to a new feeding program in the Sunday school. This feeding program is designed to give healthy meals to the kids who attend to help get them through this financially difficult season.

April 21, 2015

Mayqueling finished the fourth grade in December and began the fifth grade at the beginning of February. Mayqueling’s end of the year grades were lower than her ability and we are working to encourage her to stay focused on her school and push her to succeed. Mayqueling would love for you to visit and see her again! Through her sponsorship, Mayqueling was given her backpack, uniform, school shoes, and supplies to begin her school year. The new school year also marks a new year of Sunday school. Classes changed depending on the ages and Mayqueling moved up to a new class of 10-13 year olds. At the end of the year last year, Mayqueling participated in a celebration with her class. Her sponsorship covered the costs of this event. She also went to the New Song Clinic when she wasn’t feeling well and received food provisions for her family. In December, Mayqueling and her family were given a water filter and a teaching on water borne illnesses. This will provide them with clean drinking water for the next several years.

August 4, 2015

Mayqueling received her first report card of the fifth grade in May. She is passing all of her classes except science. Her top grades are in culture, civics, physical education. Her teacher comments that Mayqueling is extremely well behaved in class and always pays attention. She says that her grades would be better if Mayqueling studied more at home and completed all of her homework. Mayqueling has started attending weekly tutoring sessions taught by New Song staff. She does a great job using this time more as a “study hall” to get her homework done and ask questions where needed. Mayqueling has been working on her cursive handwriting and has been steadily improving.

December 2015

Makeyling is doing well in most of her classes. Her top grades are in culture (90%), civics (90%), and her vocational class (90%). In July, Makeyling celebrated her birthday and her sponsorship allowed her to have a small celebration with her family. She was also able to complete several class assignments and go on a field trip with her class. Makeyling continues to work hard to practice her cursive handwriting and comes to tutoring to learn it. Makeyling has been studying fractions in her math class including division and multiplication of mixed and improper fractions.

April 2016

Makeyling began 6th grade in February 2016. She received her uniform, shoes, backpack, school supplies and an athletic outfit to participate in her PE class. Makeyling’s favorite class is math because she enjoys figuring out how to solve problems. Currently her class has been studying polygons. Makeyling also likes studying grammar where they are dividing sentences between the subject and predicate. Makeyling’s fourteen year old sister gave birth to a baby girl at the beginning of this year. Makeyling loves her niece and often walks with her younger sister, Julissa, to visit her sister and the baby in a nearby community. However, seeing her sister drop out of school and have a child at a young age has caused Makeyling to think a great deal about her own future. She has expressed a desire to focus on school and to complete her education. No one in Makeyling’s family has ever graduated from high school. Makeyling shared with our sponsorship staff that she desires to be the first person in her family to complete this milestone. Our sponsorship staff has encouraged her to continue working hard in school and making these wise decisions. We believe that she will succeed in reaching her goals!

Fall 2016

Makeyling continues to work hard in sixth grade and is looking forward to her elementary school graduation in December. She has a 75% average overall for her first semester of classes. Her best grades are 90% in Cultural Studies, PE, and Vocational Studies. Makeyling has low grades in all of her core classes. Makeyling received her new uniform and pair of shoes for the second semester of classes. Her sponsorship also allowed her to participate in a field trip with her class and receive extra school supplies to complete special class projects. Thanks to her sponsorship, Makeyling was able to receive medical care and medicine through the New Song clinic. Makeyling says that she is working hard in her classes because she wants to learn and grow up to be a good person.
