Bio

Nuvia lives with her parents and two younger brothers. Her father works while her mom stays home with the children. Although he is working, it is not enough to meet their basic needs and they often go without food. They live in a small house made of tin and sheets of plastic. Nuvia will begin 6th grade in February 2014. She is looking forward to her last year of primary school. Her favorite classes are math, Spanish, and Language & Literature. In her free time, she likes to help her mom around the house. She wants to get a good job so that she can help her family.

April 28, 2015

Nuvia started her first year of high school in February 2015. She has enjoyed the challenges and adventures that come with attending her new school. Nuvia now rides to public bus into town each day and attends the high school that is much larger than her community elementary school. Nuvia is enjoying her new classes and has made several new friends. She really loves her Language & Literature, Geography, Cultural Studies, and Technical Studies classes. Her most challenging class is English. Nuvia enjoys learning a new language, but has been struggling in this class because it is her first year studying English. Her sponsorship has been able to help Nuvia immensely as she has made the transition from elementary school to high school. Nuvia received her uniform, shoes, backpack, and school supplies. Through her sponsorship she has also been able to purchase an athletic outfit for her PE class, a scientific calculator, and several books that she needed for her classes. Her sponsorship has helped her to complete class projects that require internet research and creating maps. Nuvia attended a public health teaching through her church in Santa Matilde where she learned how to properly brush her teeth and received a free toothbrush. She and her family were also able to receive food provisions when her dad was without work. We are excited to see how Nuvia will grow through the challenges of this transition year. She continues to work hard and we are proud of her!

November 2015

Nuvia is doing well in her first year of high school. She is working hard and succeeding in her classes. Her sponsorship has continued to support her success providing her with money for transportation to school. Nuvia has a 78% average overall in her first semester of classes. Her best grades are in Cultural Studies (95%) and Civics (94%). English has become Nuvia’s favorite class. She loves learning a new language. Her class has been studying basic conversational phrases and numbers. Her most challenging class is math. She has been studying rational numbers. Nuvia received her new uniform and shoes for the second semester of classes. Through her sponsorship, Nuvia was able to participate in the Mother’s Day and Children’s Day celebrations at her school. She was also able to complete special class projects and attend two field trips with her class. Nuvia was also able to receive free medical care through the clinic at New Song. We are so proud of Nuvia’s hard work and success!

April 2016

Nuvia began the new school year in the beginning of February. She started her second year of high school. We are so proud of how well Nuvia did in her first year of high school. For many students, the transition to high school is difficult but Nuvia excelled. Her favorite class is Spanish because she says it is easiest for her. Her most difficult class is geography. Nuvia has been working on her handwriting and studying a lot at home and with the help of a tutor in her community. Nuvia celebrated her 15th birthday at the beginning of March, which is a huge event in Hispanic culture. Through her sponsorship, Nuvia was able to have a celebration with her family and church. Nuvia’s father works harvesting sugar cane. As the harvest season comes to a close in May, Nuvia’s sponsorship provides her the materials she needs to succeed all year long. Her sponsorship also helps her with transportation costs in school throughout the year.

Fall 2016

This school year has been more challenging for Nuvia than her first year of high school. A large part of those challenges are due to the fact that Nuvia’s mom is expecting another baby. During her first trimester Nuvia was taking on much of the responsibility of cooking, cleaning and caring for her younger brothers. With this added responsibility, it was difficult for Nuvia to keep up with her school work. In the first grading period, she was failing both English and Science. Our sponsorship staff and as well as the pastor of her church, met with Nuvia’s mom and encouraged her to allow Nuvia to focus more on her school work. Since then, the family has done a better job of distributing work around the house more evenly and Nuvia has been able to raise both of her failing grades in the second grading period. She has enjoyed studying about the environment and learning about volcanoes in her science class. Sponsorship continues to help cover the cost of Nuvia’s transportation to school. She also received her new uniform and shoes for the second semester of classes. As a focus on preventative health care, Nuvia received a dental cleaning, fluoride treatment and dental hygiene teaching.
