Bio

Rafael lives with his parents and younger sister. His mom stays home with the kids. His dad only has work 6 months of the year (November-May which is the planting and harvesting season for the sugar cane company). When he works, they can meet their basic needs. In the months of unemployment, they struggle to survive.Rafa will begin 4th grade in February 2014. His favorite classes are math and Spanish. Rafael is so full of joy and has the most precious smile. He is very intelligent, talkative, and an excellent student. In his free time, he loves to play with his friends. He dreams of becoming a policeman.

April 16, 2015

Rafael finished his year in fourth grade. He finished the year with an 82% average overall and his best grades were in PE (93), Cultural Studies (88), and Civics (86). He continues to be very intelligent and quick to learn. However, he still struggles with his behavior in school, talking too much when he should be working. Rafa was able to receive free medical care through New Song’s outreach clinic in his home village, Santa Matilde. He was also able to receive free medicine. Rafa and his family participated in a public health teaching on water-born illnesses and received a free water filter for their home to ensure that they will have clean drinking water for their family. Rafa is enjoying his break from school playing with his friends and family. He began 5th grade in February 2015.

May 29, 2015

Rafael began the fifth grade at the beginning of February. He received his uniform, backpack, school shoes, and the supplies he needed. His new teacher comments that he does well academically but sometimes has a difficult time paying attention. Rafael is intelligent and loves to play with his friends. In January, Rafael celebrated his birthday and through his sponsorship, he was able to have a small celebration at his house with his family. He received a separate uniform to be able to fully participate in his PE class as well as his annual dental cleaning and fluoride treatment from the New Song Clinic.

December 2015

Rafael participated in the Independence Day parade with his school in which he was honored as a top student of the fifth grade. After participating in a smaller parade, the Santa Matilde school was asked to take part in the main celebration. This was the first time this school has participated in the big march and Rafael was very excited to be a part. He worked hard to perfect his marching so that he could be in line with the rest of the students. His sponsorship was able to cover the costs of this event. Rafael has a 90% average overall with top grades in culture (100%), civics (94%), physical education (100%), and science (92%). Rafael has joined New Song Mission’s new baseball league and he loves it. He especially loves to bat and run the bases. Through his sponsorship, Rafael received his second uniform and pair of school shoes of the year.

Rafael began the sixth grade at the beginning of February. This is his last year of elementary school before he goes on to high school next year. We are so proud of how well he is doing in his classes. Thanks to his sponsorship, he received his uniform, backpack, shoes, school supplies, and an athletic outfit to be able to participate in his physical education class. His favorite class is math because he loves working with numbers. He says that his easiest and high grade is in his math class. Rafael is a very intelligent student and sometimes gets bored in class and acts up. He is working to pay better attention and not be a distraction. Rafael plays in New Song’s baseball league on the Cardinals team.

Fall 2016

Rafael received his second uniform of the year in July. He is halfway through his last year of elementary school and continues to do well in all of his classes. Rafael’s lowest grade is his behavior in class because he can’t sit still in class. He is a very energetic and intelligent student. Rafael enjoys doing arts and crafts in his classes. The New Song baseball league started again in August and Rafael enjoys getting to participate. Through his sponsorship, he received all his needed school supplies including notebooks, pens, pencils, and crayons. His school also had a school-wide event celebrating typical Nicaraguan foods. Sponsorship helped provide the funds for this event and the church came together to cook for the school. Rafael also received his annual dental cleaning and fluoride treatment through the New Song Dental Clinic. Recently, his community was without running water for a couple of weeks. Sponsorship provided the local school with a bucket for every classroom so that the students could have drinking water while in class.
