Bio

Raquel lives with her parents and two older sisters. Her dad has renal failure and is unable to work. He is receiving a pension from the sugar cane company that provides for their family. However, this doesn’t provide for all their needs so Raquel’s  mom works selling food in order to supplement their income. Their family has been involved at New Song Church since it’s foundation in 2002. Raquel is in her last year of preschool and will graduate from preschool in November 2013. She loves to play with her cousins and friends. Raquel is excited to be in school. Please consider helping her study consistently and dream for a better future.

Raquel loved receiving her uniform, shoes, backpack and school supplies. She recently celebrated her 5th birthday. She had a huge party with a pinata and all of her friends from school, church, and the neighborhood. She was thrilled to receive the gift that you sent her. She loved the stuffed animal and the clothes fit her perfectly! Raquel is in her last year of preschool and loves it! She is looking forward to her graduation in November.

Through her sponsorship, Raquel received her second uniform and shoes for the last semester of classes. She also received extra school supplies that she needed to be able to participate fully in her classes. She is learning how to write all of her letters and to read in school. Raquel has been helping her family sell things at the local market. Raquel will graduate from preschool this year. She is excited to move up into primary school (US equivalent to elementary school). Her sponsorship will help cover the costs of her graduation. Raquel loves attending Sunday school. She especially likes getting to color in her class.

Raquel celebrated her graduation from preschool in December. She was so excited to start first grade, which began in February. She is enjoying all of her classes. Raquel’s sponsorship was able to cover the costs of her graduation ceremony. As part of a new initiative in the sponsorship program, Raquel received a medical and dental check-up before starting the new school year. She was able to get medicine from the New Song clinic. Her sponsorship was also able to help with food provisions for her and her family during a financially difficult time.

Raquel is currently in 1st grade. She is really enjoying her first year of elementary school. Her favorite class is math where she is learning all of her numbers. In her Language and Literature class, she is learning the letters of the alphabet and her vowel sounds. Although Raquel enjoys school, she struggles in her classes. She has a C- average overall. Raquel has been able to receive additional school supplies to fully participate in her classes. Raquel celebrated her 6th birthday in May. Her sponsorship helped her to celebrate together with her friends and family. She and her family were also able to receive food provisions to help their family in a difficult time. As a focus on preventative health care, Raquel participated in a dental hygiene workshop that our program put together where she learned proper teeth brushing techniques from one of the New Song dentists and received a free toothbrush. Raquel also received a new uniform and pair of shoes to start her second semester of classes.

Raquel finished the school year in December and began the second grade at the beginning of February. She was given funds to get her birth certificate so that her family could register her for school again this year. Raquel also received her new backpack, uniform, school supplies, and shoes to begin this new year. Her sponsorship was also able to provide her with a separate uniform for her physical education class. In December, Raquel and her family received a water filter and a teaching on water borne illnesses. This will provide them with clean drinking water for the next several years.

Raquel has been enjoying the second grade. She really loves school, works hard, and has a good time with her friends. Her favorite class is math. She has been practicing multi-digit addition and subtraction as well as learning how to read a clock. In her class, they made clocks to be able to practice. Raquel’s hardest class is language arts. She has been learning to read and has been struggling some in this area. Raquel celebrated her birthday in March and her sponsorship was able to cover the costs of a small celebration with her family. Raquel’s school had activities celebrating Mother’s Day and International Kid’s Day. Through her sponsorship, Raquel received funds to participate in these events. Thanks to a visiting team, she was given a pair of flip flops to wear while playing instead of her school shoes.

Raquel began the third grade at the beginning of February. Thanks to her sponsorship, she received her backpack, uniform, shoes, school supplies, and an athletic outfit to be able to participate in her physical education class. Her favorite class is language arts because she likes to read and do the homework that they assign her. In class, she is learning how to look up words in the dictionary and answer questions based on a story. Raquel’s mom works selling drinks to the people who are harvesting sugar cane. As the harvest season is only half of the year, Raquel’s sponsorship provides year-long support and gives her the tools she needs to succeed academically.

Fall 2016

Raquel received her second uniform of the year in July. She is halfway through her third grade year and says that her teacher is very kind and patient. Through her sponsorship, Raquel has received her school supplies including notebooks, pens, crayons, and a geometry set. She also was able to have a small birthday celebration in May with funds from her sponsorship. Raquel is working hard to do well in her classes. Her top grade is in Spanish and her lowest grade is in science. Raquel is really excited because her sister is pregnant and she is excited to be an aunt. She is looking forward to helping to take care of the baby. In June, Nicaragua experienced a strong earthquake. Raquel comments that she was really scared and her family left their house because they were worried that it would fall down.
