Bio

Sharon lives with her grandparents and younger brother. Sharon says that her family is wonderful because “they really care for me and always protect me.” The family survives on the pension that her grandfather receives from the sugar cane company. With only this small pension, it is difficult to meet their basic needs. Sharon will begin 2nd grade in February 2013. Her favorite classes are Spanish and math. In her free time, she likes to study and play kickball. Sharon dreams of becoming a great doctor.

Thanks to Sharon’s sponsorship, she received extra needed school supplies to help her in some of her classes. She enjoyed her classes this year until the year of the school year, which ended in November. She especially enjoyed her math class where they were learning how to add large numbers and multiplication tables. Sharon received her uniforms and school shoes to complete the school year. A few months ago, Sharon’s cousin who lived with them, fell and broke his leg. He moved back in with his mom in another village. This has been difficult for Sharon and all the cousins and they played together every day. Through a new initiative within the sponsorship program, New Song Dental Clinic held a dental health teaching in Sharon’s Sunday school class. This allowed for preventative health to be taught and each child also received a free toothbrush.

Sharon successfully finished her year in 3rd grade. Her best grades were in Cultural Studies (98), PE (88), and Language & Literature (85). Her sponsorship allowed her to participate in her school’s end of the year celebration. During the school break, Sharon enjoyed her time playing at home with her cousins. She received free medical care through the New Song clinic and her family participated in a public health teaching through the church where they learned about water-born illnesses and received a water filter to give them access to clean drinking water. Hopefully this will improve the overall health of their family. Sharon started 4th grade in February 2015. She received her uniform, shoes, backpack, and school supplies for the new school year. Sharon has been learning about the digestive system in her science class. They have also been examining maps of Nicaragua. In math, they have been reviewing the skills learned from last year.

April 2016

Sharon is so excited to be sponsored this year! She began the fifth grade in the beginning of February. Thanks to her sponsorship, Sharon received her uniform, shoes, backpack, school supplies, and an athletic outfit to be able to participate in her physical education class. Sharon is a bright girl who works hard in class. Sharon is learning about multiplication and division of multi-digit numbers with decimals. In science, her class is learning about the solar system and the rotation of the earth around the sun. Recently, the New Song church that Sharon attends changed locations to the other side of the river that she lives on. Even though the walk to church is a little longer, Sharon continues to attend Sunday school.

Fall 2016

Sharon continues to work hard in 5th grade. Her best grades are in Language Arts and Science. In science they have been learning about the products of Central America. Math is her most difficult class. They have been learning about equivalent fractions. She received her new uniform and pair of shoes for the second semester of classes. Sharon also loves to be a part of the Sunday school program at her church. Her favorite part is learning the Bible stories. One of her favorite stories is David and Goliath. Sharon also says that she loves learning more about Jesus.
