Yerling began the new school year in February. She is enjoying her new classes and new teachers. In the end of January, Yerling took a cumulative English test to see if she would pass her class for third year of secondary school, having failed it last year. She did pass the test and moved up classes in English. Yerling continues to participate in the English class taught by New Song staff. She is working harder this year to make sure she passes her classes. Through her sponsorship, Yerling received her backpack, uniform, and the school supplies she needs to be successful in her classes. Yerling has been incredibly helpful in new grade level specific tutoring classes once a week. She assists in homework, studying, and extra supplementing help for all grade levels. Yerling is also helping to teach Sunday school in her Santa Matilde community.

August 25, 2014

Yerling continues to be very involved within the community and the church family, teaching SundaySchool, dance classes, and tutoring the younger children in her neighborhood. Yerling's father works on the other side of the country, and was recently able to visit and spend some time with the girls. He sends money when he can, but Yerling has been able to receive nutritional support this year, as needed. Through sponsorship, she has received her second uniform and pair of shoes for the year, and was able to purchase a scientific calculator to help her in her studies. She was able to get a dental cleaning through the New Song clinic, and with her sponsorship money will also be receiving further dental care that she requires.

January 3, 2015

Yerling will finish her fourth year of high school at the end of November. She has had some difficulty this year focusing on her schoolwork because of the stressful demands of having a teenage social life. Her teacher and assistant principal are working to help her establish some priorities. Yerling is incredibly intelligent and loves to practice her English with anyone. Her grade in English has been improving, but is struggling in her math class. They are studying geometry. She promises to work harder in her class and put forth the necessary effort to pass for the year. The New Song Clinic offered a outreach dental and medical clinic in Santa Matilde. Thanks to her sponsorship, Yerling was able to receive major dental work to help her care for her teeth. At the end of October, Yerling’s aunt returned from Guatemala where she was living. She moved back in with her family and is pregnant. This changes the dynamics of the household greatly as her aunt's boyfriend visits frequently and sometimes disrupts the family dynamics.

Yerling has excelled this year both personally and academically. She finished her senior year with an 80% average overall. Her best grades were 95% in both English and Civics. Her last year of high school has been easier than Yerling had anticipated. Every high school senior has to present a major research project at the end of the school year. Yerling completed hers and did very well. Through her sponsorship, she was able to complete several class projects and attend two more field trips with her school. In December 2015, Yerling graduated from high school. She was thrilled to celebrate her graduation! Sponsorship covered the cost of her participation in this event. Outside of school, Yerling continues to help with sponsorship and will take on a greater role in this program after high school. She also serves as a Sunday school teacher at her church in Santa Matilde. Yerling has already begun her post-high school studies. She is currently studying a technical degree in computers. Yerling would eventually like to go to university and study languages, but she felt that it would be advantageous to study computers first so that she is more comfortable with a computer and better able to complete university level assignments.

April 2016

Yerling began studying at the technical school in December. She has really enjoyed the classes she has been taking. Her school recently finished the section of studying devoted to learning about computers including powerpoint and excel. Her track will now move on to studying business administration and other things. Yerling works hard helping the sponsorship program with running the program in Santa Matilde. She has gone and collected information for us and teaches Sunday school. Yerling has also made herself available to students from Santa Matilde who need tutoring and help with their homework during the week. She always has students at her house wanting her help. Ultimately, her desire is still to attend university after she finishes her technical school.

Fall 2016

Yerling will finish her year of technical school soon. She has thoroughly enjoyed what she has been studying. Her class has had several different units including accounting, operating systems, internet, and she is currently learning about computer parts and how to assemble a computer. She works hard in her classes and enjoys getting to go every Saturday. Yerling still would love to be able to study English at a university. We know she is extremely talented in English and could potentially find work as a translator one day. Yerling continues to help sponsorship staff run the program in her community. She is helpful in checking in on kids and students even go to her house during the week so she can help them with their homework. Yerling is a huge help to us in this area!
